GLASGOW — Teachers at Barren County Trojan Academy got a nice surprise Friday afternoon when members of the student council presented them with tokens of appreciation in the form of Valentine’s Day candies.
The “random acts of kindness” were part of a week-long activity where students practiced simply being nice to each other.
“The student council planned all of this,” said Brenda Chaney, youth services coordinator. “It’s a character-building activity. A lot of times, people think you’ve got to go out and spend a lot of money to do something, but you don’t. All it takes is a kind word or gesture that means a lot.”
During the week, when students witnessed other students doing something nice, the observer would write the name of the actor on a slip of paper and on Friday, those names were drawn for prizes.
“It’s really been great, the students have really stepped up this week,” Chaney said.
The students walked the halls wheeling a trolley with the neatly wrapped packages of candy, delivering them to surprised teachers.
“This is so sweet,” said Kessa Moody, upon receiving her gift. “You all make it very easy to be nice because you all are so nice,” she told the students.
“They are so sweet, a great bunch of kids,” Moody said.
The students said they appreciate their teachers and wanted to do something nice.
“We thought it’d be a nice thing to do for the teachers here,” said Kati Spillman, student council member. “They work so hard.”
The students try to come up with an activity like random acts of kindness when they meet each week, Chaney said.
“I’m really proud of them, they give their time during and after school to make the days a little more fun and brighter,” Chaney said.
Student council members participating were Spillman, Emily Certaw, Nick Barr and Calvin Penn.
