GLASGOW — Part of Glasgow Middle School’s gymnasium roof was gone with the wind last Wednesday.
Director of Pupil Personnel Randy Wilkin-son reported to the Glasg-ow School Board on Mon-day night about damage that occurred to a section of the school’s roof on Feb. 11 as high winds swept through the area.
Wilkinson was contacted by school officials between 3 and 3:15 p.m. last Wednesday telling him “part of the roof was blowing off” at the middle school, he said.
Upon his physical inspection, it was discovered a section of the flashing that secured the roof had blown off and the high winds had peeled back the rubber membrane, Wilkinson said. After climbing onto the roof and seeing the wind had gotten under the membrane and pushed it back about half way across the span of the roof, he arranged for temporary repairs to be made.
“Luckily it wasn’t raining (at that time),” he said.
A half-dozen employees from Gunter Roofing arrived first thing Thursday morning and made a temporary fix to the membrane, reattaching it to the roof deck with 2-by-4 foot battens and roofing nails, he said. The membrane detached from the insulation and is not currently glued down.
Wilkinson was waiting Wednesday for a representative from the board’s insurance underwriter, Ohio Casualty, to arrive and inspect the damage. With Tuesday night’s rain storm, there were concerns about water damage to the gymnasium’s wooden floor, but he said there were only a few leaks and they were confined to the area of the stage. Workers were scheduled to return to repatch the roof in the area of the leaks Wednesday morning.
The temporary work that has been completed so far will cost the district approximately $7,000, Wilkinson said. The district insurance policy has a $2,500 deductible. He has one bid for the permanent repair work and is trying to get at least one more.
The first estimate to repair the gym roof with a new membrane and new flashing is more than $35,000.
“That’s just the gym,” he said. “We’re not even talking about the whole school.”
The roof has lasted for almost 17 years. It is original to the school, which was built in 1992-93, Wilkinson said.
No further work can be done until the insurance adjustor has inspected the damage and Wilkinson receives additional bid estimates, he said.
“I’m hoping they’ll start next week.”
