6:45 p.m. Evening Update: Former Monroe Co. deputy sheriff shot and killed

TOMPKINSVILLE —  

Kentucky State Police troopers and detectives from Post 15 are currently on the scene of a shooting that occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Rush Lane in Monroe County. 

Herbert Proffitt, 82, was pronounced dead at Monroe County Hospital at 4:20 p.m., an apparent victim of a gunshot wound.  

Further information will be released as it is made available. 

 Proffitt was a former Monroe County Deputy Sheriff.
