Judge sends Cooper case to grand jury

GLASGOW — Enough probable cause exists for a grand jury to hear the case of a Glasgow man accused of providing alcoholic beverages to a 15-year-old girl and then having sex with her while she was intoxicated, Barren District Judge John Alexander determined Monday at a pretrial hearing.

Edward “Eddie” J Cooper is charged with third-degree rape, third-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, and two counts of theft by unlawful taking or dispensation – all others. The theft charges – one for more than $500 and one for less than $500 – stem from an accusation that he also took the phones belonging to the girl he is accused of raping and a friend of hers to keep them from calling anyone for help, according to court documents. The charges of rape and theft more than $500 are felonies; the other two charges are misdemeanors.

Glasgow Police Department Sgt. Brad Lewis testified at the hearing that after officers interviewed the girl, they requested a photographic line-up, and “she immediately identified Mr. Cooper as the suspect” from among eight pictures of randomly chosen people with similar characteristics.

The rape kit yielded a positive result for intercourse. Toxicology results are not available yet, he said.
