GLASGOW —
Barren County native Sydney Collier has always been motivated by academics and success, however, attending a recent leadership conference showed her that leaders come from all walks of life.
Collier recently attended the Hugh O' Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership conference in Lexington and witnessed firsthand what it takes to be a successful leader.
“We learned what it takes to be a leader and we learned that most leaders don't even realize they are in a leader-type of role,” Collier said. “We did a lot of different activities and attended numerous seminars that focused on leadership. It was really educational.”
Collier was impressed by Matt Jones, who gave up his law career to pursue his passion of sports radio.
“He told us to do what we want to do and not to settle for anything,” Collier said.
Collier said she wasn't sure what to expect at the conference.
“At first I was really weary about going because I didn't think that I would enjoy myself, but once I got there I was really glad that I went,” Collier said.
The conference also centered around the importance of networking and social media.
“They had a college fair and some of the facilitators there were from other universities and colleges,” Collier said. “It's a nice way to get connections to different colleges.”
