I-65 work has negative impact on tourism

GLASGOW — The widening of Interstate 65 at Cave City is affecting tourism and that concerns many members of the Cave City Chamber of Commerce.

 On Tuesday night, chamber members got a chance to voice their opinions and to ask questions about the project.

 Greg Meredith, district engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s District 3 Office in Bowling Green and guest speaker for the chamber of commerce’s monthly meeting, answered several questions about the project, including one regarding its completion date.

“They are in their last phase on that section. That’s where they are working south back toward Park City on the southbound, right side. That’s their last phase and I think their completion date is in August,” Meredith said. “So, I would say in June or July that will be gone.”

Carol DeGroft, executive secretary for the chamber of commerce, pointed out that Cave City is a tourism-based town.

“I know last year there were a lot of missed opportunities,” she said.

It is possible the state highway department can take a look at the lane closure and possibly move it further south, Meredith said.

“I don’t think there is an opportunity to make the split south of the exit, but there is a whole lot more involved. There’s that hillside that we’ve got to take off. So, I don’t know that we could do it any earlier, but feel confident that at about August that will be wrapped up.”
