GLASGOW — The city of Glasgow has agreed to pay $5,000 to assist with funding for the Barren-Edmonson County Drug Task Force.
On Monday, Mayor Darrell Pickett met with Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton to discuss the city rejoining the task force in some way. The funding will come from the city’s miscellaneous fund, the mayor said.
“We got into such a tight dilemma with the shortage of (police) personnel that I wanted to do what I could to help,” he said. “Because of our shortage we have to pay a lot of overtime. But we are still protecting the public, and if we need to work overtime, then we’ll work overtime.”
Task force director Jeff Scruggs said he was appreciative of any support the city is willing to provide.
“There are a lot of good things we can do with that money,” he said.
Late in 2008 the Glasgow Police Department and Cave City Police Department each withdrew as members of the task force, leaving the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office and Barren County Sheriff’s Office as the only local members. State and federal agencies also work with the task force.
It was really important for the city to be involved in the task force, Eaton said. The city’s involvement helps the task force to get grant money for being multi-county and multi-agency.
“I’m really pleased with what happened,” he said. “We need the city to be part of the drug task force.”
Eaton is hopeful the city, at its next budget year, will fully rejoin the task force by adding a detective. The county is currently funding three detectives, while Edmonson County pays for one detective. Mayor Pickett said he anticipates being able to add a detective to the task force in the near future.
Sheriff Eaton had brought up the task force issue at the Sept. 8 Barren Fiscal Court meeting when Glasgow Police Chief Horace Johnson asked the county to support becoming part of South Central Kentucky Crime Stoppers.
Eaton stated at the meeting he did not feel the county needed Crime Stoppers because of the sheriff's tip line. He also cited the city's lack of cooperation with the county in terms of the drug task force as a reason against supporting Crime Stoppers, but added he did not have any problem with the program.
“Crime Stoppers is a great program and it will be a benefit to the county,” Eaton said. “Any time I’ve called with a case in the past they’ve always been willing to help.”
Eaton said last week, after thinking about the issue, he did intend to support Crime Stoppers coming to Barren County.
