GLASGOW — Barren County High School officials were recently notified that five students from their school have earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards in recognition of exceptional achievement on AP exams.
All five students were in the 2009 BCHS graduating class, according to principal Keith Hale.
“I am so proud of these Advanced Placement Scholars,” Hale said. “The national recognition that these students receive is rewarding for the students and for our AP program at Barren County High School.”
Addison Alexander qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Emily Kinslow qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
Three other students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. They are Jacob Delk, Cassandra Garner and Courtney Thompson.
AP offers 37 different college-level courses and exams for high school students across the country. The program gives students the opportunity to earn college credit and improve their standings in the college admissions process. Exam results are accepted by more than 3,600 colleges and universities worldwide for college credit and/or advanced placement in their programs, including better than 90 percent of four-year institutions in the United States, according to information from The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program.
High school students who score a 3 or higher on the exams, based on a scale from 1 to 5, have greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates, according to AP research.
“Successes such as these reinforce our goal of preparing students for a postsecondary education and beyond,” Hale said. “It has been shown that successful AP programs are indicators of successful and timely college completion. I truly believe these AP Scholars will fulfill and exceed our expectations.”
About 18 percent of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

County struggles to provide EPA report
Barren County Road Department Head Johnny Kinslow called his bi-monthly report to the fiscal court his “gloom and doom” report Tuesday night. After five years of letters and discussions, the Environmental Protection Agency has informed Kinslow that he must produce a closure report for underground fuel tanks that were removed 13 years ago, or face unnamed consequences.
