Residents living in northern Hart and southern LaRue counties are under a boil water advisory until further notice.
The boil water advisory was issued by the Green River Valley Water District over the weekend when 7 feet of an 8-inch water main between Jonesville and Magnolia communities in Hart County broke. The break occurred around 2 p.m. Saturday, said John Rutledge, water treatment plant superintendent.
“They got it fixed about 8 p.m.,” Rutledge said, but the boil water advisory remains in effect due to a loss of water pressure.
The water company is performing routine maintenance on a water storage tank that serves a portion of each county. Routine maintenance is performed on water storage tanks once every five years to ensure their integrity, make sure they are clean and to paint them, he said.
Typically, when there is a water main break residences and businesses are supplied water from a water storage tank, but with the tank out of service there was not a large enough water supply to meet the demand.
“It didn’t take but just a little while before the mains were drained out and lost pressure,” Rutledge said. “If you lose water pressure and have people without water the standard protocol is to issue a boil water advisory.”
Water samples have been taken and sent to a lab for testing. Rutledge anticipates the test results being returned and the boil water advisory lifted by Tuesday.
