POLICE BRIEFS: GPD warns of phone scam

GLASGOW — The Glasgow Police Department advises citizens of a telephone scam. Lt. Col. Kent Keen, department public information officer, said a detective within the department received word of the scam from another police department and verified the validity of the alert.

According to the alert, the scam involves an individual identifying himself as a service technician for a telephone company such as AT&T who is conducting a test on the telephone lines. He states that in order to complete the test, one should touch nine, zero, the pound sign and then hang up.

The alert reports, however, that by pushing 90#, one gives the requesting individual full access to his or her telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to the home phone number.

Police report that the scam has been originating from many local jails and prisons. Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton and Keen reported that they have not heard of any local residents affected by the scam.
