GLASGOW — The Glasgow Police Department advises citizens of a telephone scam. Lt. Col. Kent Keen, department public information officer, said a detective within the department received word of the scam from another police department and verified the validity of the alert.
According to the alert, the scam involves an individual identifying himself as a service technician for a telephone company such as AT&T; who is conducting a test on the telephone lines. He states that in order to complete the test, one should touch nine, zero, the pound sign and then hang up.
The alert reports, however, that by pushing 90#, one gives the requesting individual full access to his or her telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to the home phone number.
Police report that the scam has been originating from many local jails and prisons. Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton and Keen reported that they have not heard of any local residents affected by the scam.
Vehicle fire at WKU Glasgow
Glasgow firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the parking lot on the Western Kentucky University Glasgow campus on Wednesday. Around 8 a.m. the fire department found the fire coming from the engine compartment of Scottsville resident Hillary Harper’s vehicle, according to a Glasgow Fire Department report. The fire was extinguished by firefighters and contained to the engine area. No injuries were reported and the fire appeared to be electrical in nature, according to the report.
Woman charged with identity theft
Horse Cave police arrested a woman on Tuesday on multiple charges of identity theft of another without consent.
Donna Hale, 50, of Horse Cave, allegedly stole another person’s ATM card and obtained cash on several occasions from Citizens First Bank and Love’s Travel Stop in Horse Cave between Sept. 8 and Oct. 6, according to a Horse Cave Police report.
Police charged Hale with 18 felony counts of identity theft and she was lodged in the Hart County Jail.
Hart County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Glass assisted in the arrest. Hale’s bond is set at $9,500.
