POLICE BRIEFS: Sheriff’s office investigating mail scam

GLASGOW — The Barren County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a mail scam that it says could affect others in Barren County. Trevor Phillips, BCSO public relations director, said that the scam involves a letter arriving in the mail stating that the resident has received a home improvement grant and includes a bogus check for the recipient to cash. The solicitor then asks for the recipient to send back money they received and lists well-known companies as donors for the grant, he said.

Detective Ann Phelps is investigating a local case of a resident falling for the scam and advises anyone who receives a similar letter to not cash the check. If anyone has any information regarding the scam, contact the Barren County Sheriff’s Department at 651-2771.

Eaton elected to KSA position

The Kentucky Sheriff’s Association elected Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton as its 2010 sergeant at arms during the association’s annual conference last month. According to a KSA report, Eaton has served on the board of directors for many years and this marks his second time serving as sergeant at arms.

“Sheriff Eaton is most deserving and has always represented Kentucky sheriffs in a constructive manner. I feel sure he will continue to stand for Kentucky sheriffs well, along with the citizens of Barren County and the Commonwealth during his tenure,” said KSA Executive Director Jerry Wagner, in the report.

Wagner said the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association aims to keep sheriffs “abreast of what is going on in the law enforcement community with ongoing training and legislation.”
