Applications for Veterans Wall plaques still available

GLASGOW — Applications for placing names on the Barren County-Glasgow Veterans Wall of Honor are still being accepted.

Since the wall was unveiled on Veterans Day, more than 200 more names have been received and more plaques will be added to the wall shortly.

Application forms can still be obtained at the city clerk’s office on the first floor of the Glasgow City Building and at the offices of the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce next door to the city building. The applications can be picked up there, completed, and returned there with the payment. Cost of the plaque is $40 each.

Engraving and placement on the wall is included in the $40 fee.

Committee chair Bobby Travis noted, “There are tens of thousands of men and women who have served honorably or are presently serving their country from Barren County. We want to emphasize that you don't have to be a native of Glasgow or Barren County. If you have lived here for more than a few years you are still eligible to have your name on the wall."

It is estimated that there is room on the wall for over 2,000 names.

Only the name of the veteran and branch of service are being placed on the plaque. The wall committee discussed including such things as rank and medals and citations but due to the cost of engraving, it was felt that the plaques might be too expensive for some families to afford. And also, the committee felt that all the plaques should be the same size and contain the same number of lines.

The application form includes the name of the veteran being honored, last name first, first name second followed by a middle initial, and the branch of service. The form also asks for proof of service such as the military form DD214 which is available in the office of the Barren County Court Clerk. The application also asks for the name of the person submitting the application plus an address and phone number in case the committee has a question.

Although only the name and branch of service will be on the plaque, the application also asks for any other pertinent information such as rank or military honors which might be used in any future recognition by the Barren County Veterans Association. Barren County is known to have two Congressional Medal of Honor winners and they are represented on the wall.

The applications are to be completed and placed in a sealed envelope bearing the name of the person making application, along with payment, and returned to either the chamber office or city clerk’s office.

Anyone wishing further information may contact a member of the Wall of Honor committee, Bobby Travis, Barlow Ropp, W.S. Everett or Joel Wilson.
