GLASGOW — Local chain retail stores, overall, had positive outcomes with sales results during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to store managers.
While unable to discuss specific sales numbers and percentage increases, a standard corporate operating guideline for retail outlets, local managers did say they were pleased with how well things went in their stores.
“Actually, Thursday and Friday, we did very well,” said Bob Szabo, Kmart store manager. “We were up over last year. Black Friday was an excellent day. It was beyond my expectations. Everyone was out shopping for the holidays.”
National retail sales were up slightly compared to last year, 0.5 percent, during the traditional holiday kick-off sales weekend, according to The Associated Press.
“Business is rocking. We’re doing good,” said Beau Black, store manager for Peebles.
He wasn’t alone in his assesment of the weekend.
“It was great,” Lowe’s store manager Daniel Toms said. “We are really pleased with what we accomplished over the three-day period.”
A few locals followed the tradition of customers in larger cities and lined up outside Staples on L. Rogers Wells Boulevard and braved the cold Thursday night temperatures to get the first opportunity to buy special bargains in the store on Friday morning.
“A couple of folks said they had been here since 9 p.m. the night before,” store manager Greg Hunt said. “They were happy to be first in line.”
Hunt said sales went just as well as he had expected them to go and were comparable to last year.
“With the economy in this area the way it is, that’s pretty good,” he said.
Brad Korte, store manager of the local Walmart reported a fairly uneventful shopping weekend for his customers.
“It went pretty smooth, the whole process,” he said. “We had a really good day. It felt like it was a success.”
This week and next week are traditionally a bit slower than Thanksgiving weekend and the week leading up to Christmas when it comes to store customer traffic. That makes it a good time to shop for people who don’t like to fight the crowds.
“There’s always a bit of a lull after (Thanksgiving),” Szabo said. “It always happens, but we’re holding our own.”
Korte agreed.
“I think people are taking a little bit of a break after the holiday,” he said. “But it’s the first of the month, things are gearing back up.”
