County considers construction guidelines
GLASGOW — Barren County is considering adding a set of construction guidelines that would place the county in line with local cities.
Magistrates have been provided with a copy of the International Property Maintenance Code to review, said Barren County Judge-Executive Davie Greer.
“This code is something Glasgow, Park City and Cave City already have,” she said.
The county has a building inspector who would be able to handle the code, Greer said. This is not something where the county needs to inspect every building.
“It gives us something to use in case there’s a problem,” she said.
The building and property committee should meet and discuss the code prior to the next fiscal court meeting, said Magistrate Charles Allen.
The code was created to provide the U.S. with a single set of consistent construction regulations, the International Code Council (ICC) developed the code, which was the first set of coordinated and comprehensive construction and fire codes for use nationwide. Most U.S. cities, counties, and states that adopt and enforce codes choose the International Codes developed by the International Code Council, according to the National Center for Healthy Housing Web site.
Prior to the meeting, Greer also brought up the fact the U.S. Census Bureau is looking for temporary workers in Barren and the surrounding counties. These jobs are part-time and pay $11.75 per hour, she said.
“You not only would be working you would be doing a service for your community,” Greer said. “The statistics taken by the Census help determine how billions of dollars in federal money is spent.”
Someone from the Census bureau had asked Greer to bring up the jobs and let people know that to qualify they have to take a basic skills test.
