GLASGOW — A Glasgow man was killed as the result of a one-vehicle wreck on Thursday morning.
Terry A. Smith, 38, of Glasgow, was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Tim Gibson approximately 8.6 miles west of Glasgow and 4 miles from the Warren County line.
Smith was traveling east on U.S. 68/Ky. 80 in a 2000 Dodge Neon sometime before 11:40 a.m. Thursday when his vehicle went off the right side of the roadway. He then overcorrected, re-entered the road and traveled across the opposite lane. The car became airborne and struck an embankment, flipped and came to final rest in a creek bed on its top, according to a Barren County Sheriff’s preliminary investigation report.
Smith was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the report.
Autopsy results are pending from the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville.
Deputy Kevin Wilson is lead investigator in the case. He was assisted by deputies Steve Runyon and Mike Wood and Constable Gary Gillon at the scene.
Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Service and the volunteer fire departments from South Barren and Park City also responded to the crash site.
Ten fatality wrecks have resulted in 13 deaths investigated by the sheriff’s office since the beginning of the year, said Trevor Phillips, BCSO public relations officer.
Another recent crash was investigated by the Glasgow Police Department.
A two-vehicle collision in rainy conditions on North Jackson Highway on Tuesday evening slightly injured four people.
Virginia R. Vincent, 40, of 36 Peterson Morrison Road, Cave City, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet northbound on U.S. 31E, when a 2008 Dodge Caravan, operated by Kelly D. Slagle, 33, of Colonial Heights, Glasgow, pulled from the driveway of North Jackson Elementary into Vincent’s path around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Glasgow Police report.
Vincent said she saw Slagle’s van pull out in front of her, but she was unable to stop before striking it on the driver’s side door, resulting in moderate damage to the van and moderate to severe damage to the front of her vehicle, according to the report. Slagle said she did not see Vincent’s car until it was too late.
Both Vincent and Slagle and passengers in their vehicles, Nicholas Vincent, 13, of 36 Peterson Morrison Road, Cave City, and Ava G. Slagle, 1, of 64 Colonial Heights, Glasgow, were transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital by Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Service for various injuries. All four were treated and released, according to hospital spokesperson Bart Logsdon.
GPD Officer Charles Eubank responded the scene.
