GLASGOW — Students who qualify for Pell Grant funding at P.J.’s College of Cosmetology will receive a larger award for the 2009-10 school year thanks to additional dollars through the American Recovery Reinvestment Act.
The Glasgow beauty school is one of several accredited colleges nationwide that will share in the funding, and officials at the schools are thrilled to be included.
“I think it’s great,” said Josh Morris, admissions director. “I think it’s a good thing.”
P.J.’s College of Cosmetology is accredited through the Commission on Occupational Education and receives Title IV funding from the federal government. Because of this, students enrolled at P.J.’s College of Cosmetology who qualify for Pell Grants, which is based on either the students’ income or their parents’ income, will receive $5,350 instead of $4,850.
“That’s money they don’t have to pay back,” said Louise Hester, director of the school.
In addition to receiving additional Pell Grant funding, students also qualify for additional tax credits.
“If you take at least one class from an accredited school, including graduate and undergraduate institutions, the maximum tax credit for 2009-10 is $2,000 now,” Morris said.
P.J.’s College of Cosmetology has several locations in Kentucky and Indiana and offers students three programs — nail technician, cosmetology and junior instructor programs.
The school operates on clock hours. To receive a nail technician degree students must take 600 clock hours, which on average is a six-month program. The cosmetology program requires 1,800 clock hours and is about a 15-month program. Students who are state licensed cosmetologists can come back and take an additional 1,000 clock hours to become a junior instructor.
The Glasgow beauty school has 63 students enrolled.
