GLASGOW — MEETING: Tompkinsville City Commission
DATE: Dec. 17, 2009
ACTION: Commissioners took the following action: Approved the November meeting minutes; agreed to transfer a surplus police cruiser to the Tompkinsville-Monroe County Airport for use as a courtesy car at the airport; approved on first reading an ordinance creating a captain’s position in the police department; approved on first reading an ordinance creating an assistant maintenance supervisor position in the maintenance department; agreed to purchase a tank to pump water from the sludge ponds and a trash pump for $1,500 from a vendor in Cookeville, Tenn.; and agreed to pay police officer Massey $1,200 toward his bill for grant writing services.
ITEMS TABLED: No official action was taken regarding groups wishing to hold road blocks. Instead the commission wants groups to either contact the city hall by letter or to come to the next city commission meeting to express their thoughts on the issue.
PRESENTATIONS: Tompkinsville Elementary science teacher Dana Hammer and her students came before the commission to spake about recycling. The school was recently awarded a $4,000 PRIDE grant to purchase items for an outdoor classroom and to fund the start-up of a PRIDE Club. The PRIDE Club held a persuasive essay contest recently. Fourth-grader Mariah Carey’s essay was selected as the winner. Carey read her essay to the commissioners.
REPORTS: Mayor Steve Carter gave commissioners a report on the belt press project for the sewer plant. He reported that Cleary Construction has poured part of the concrete and when the weather improved they will finish the concrete and be ready to start the building that will house the belt press.
CLOSED SESSION: Commissioners met in closed session to discuss personnel issues and the possible sale of real estate. Upon resuming their open session an announcement was made that no action was taken.
