Building a pathway to the future

Center raises funds one brick at a time

GLASGOW — The sidewalk leading to the entrance of the Liberty District Ralph Bunche Community Center is no longer just a walkway. It is now the Ralph Bunche Historical Walk.

During the last few weeks strips of red bricks engraved either in memory of, or in honor of someone have been laid at various points along the walk.

“It’s just a preservation of the history of the Bunche Center,” said Janice Crenshaw, president of the Ralph Bunche Community Foundation, who is spearheading the project.

Proceeds from the sidewalk project will be used to help cover the cost to maintain the community center, including some ongoing renovation projects.

“We are trying to renovate the upstairs,” Crenshaw said.

Originally, the building had only one bathroom on the second floor.

“We’ve made two up there — a men’s and a women’s bathroom. We’ve tiled the floors and put new stalls in,” she said.
