BCHS student wins first at Governor's Cup

GLASGOW —

Barren County High School senior Mattie Bruton placed first in the composition category of the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition’s Governor’s Cup State Finals on Monday.

Bruton also placed 10th in the language arts category at the state competition from Saturday, March 16, through Monday, March 18. She has been competing in the language arts and composition category with the academic team since the fourth grade.

For this competition, Bruton had only 90 minutes to craft an on-the-spot persuasive speech against fracking. A tough feat, but Bruton said she’s used to the competition and working under pressure.

BCHS Academic Team Coach Ken Cook gives Bruton all the credit for her success.

“She’s a very talented young lady,” said. “It’s no thanks to me. She’s just a very hard worker.”
