Diabetics gain info at health dept. event

GLASGOW — Barren County residents dealing with diabetes had the opportunity to spend Saturday morning learning more about the disease and how to live healthy during the Barren River District Health Department’s Diabetes Day Out at Columbia Avenue Church of Christ.

The health department’s Diabetes Center of Excellence put on the event for free with the help of sponsors Save-A-Lot, Bowling Green podiatrist Dr. Christopher Holland, T.J. Samson Community Hospital and US Bank. This year is the first year the health department has started offering the Diabetes Day Out, and after hosting the event in other counties, DCOE Secretary Brenda Iler said it has been a well-received program so far.

“We did one in Warren County and it was a a good success story,” Iler said.

Diabetes is one of the main focuses of the health department, since it is such a community problem in the eight Barren River District counties, said Diane Eakles, R.N. and care coordinator with the DCOE. The prevalence of the disease in the area makes it important to provide fun and informative events.

“We just wanted to make something that was fun for diabetics,” Eakles said.
