Global Fest to showcase area’s diversity

GLASGOW — Many festivals will take place this weekend, but only one showcases the cultural diversity of the community.

Global Fest in the Barrens starts at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Glasgow.

“This is an excellent cultural networking and educational event for our region — for both adults and children. Our regional area is so diverse and this event provides a way to share information about different cultures and a way to show respect and appreciation for them,” said Ann Stewart with the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission.

This marks the 10th year for the festival, which features ethnic foods, live entertainment by various musical groups, a belly dance performance, and a cruise-in, among other things.

“We always try to come up with something that the community likes,” said Rondal Buford, president of the Global Fest committee.

The entertainment the festival offers is Buford’s favorite.

“I like the different varieties of music,” he said, adding the committee takes into consideration some people enjoy country music, while others like gospel or rock ‘n roll.

Because this is the 10th year for the festival, many of the groups who performed at the festival in the past have been invited back to perform.

“The one thing we strive to do is to help educate people about the different cultures, but we also strive to have quality entertainment for the children, as well as adults,” said Alma Glover, director of the festival committee. “It becomes a great family event for the day.”

Headlining the festival will be the band Black Widow.

“We had such a demand for them to come that we invited them to come back this year,” Glover said. “We really want people to come out and hear them.”

One of the event’s highlights is the Teen Idol Contest.

In 2009, there were 15 contestants.

“We really can’t take more than 10 because we run out of time,”  Glover said. “We want to encourage teenagers to register early. They can go online and download the application at www.barrenglobalfest.com and then they can click on teen idol. We encourage teenagers to register early for Teen Idol because the space is limited.”
