Barren County Fair Day 8: Time for 4-H kids to shine

GLASGOW — For many, entering county fair competitions is a family tradition. Some took part as 4-Hers when they were younger and now their children are following in their footsteps.

Hannah Kingrey is one of those people.

The Glasgow resident has entered items in the Barren County Floral Hall competition ever since she was a little girl. She grew up entering items in the 4-H division, and now that she is an adult she takes part in the open division.

“I just like to do it,” she said. “It’s fun.”

On Friday morning she entered flowers in the lily, geranium and hanging plant categories.

“I try to keep them watered … take care of them best I can,” she said, adding it wasn’t easy this summer with the weather being so hot.

Her children are now 4-Hers and like their mother did when she was younger, they submitted entries on Friday morning in the 4-H division.

Kingrey said she likes what her children learn by participating in the competitions.

“It helps them to be more well-rounded,” she said. “I want them to have the opportunity to explore new boundaries.”

Not everybody has a family history of participating in county fair competition.

Lori Mutter, of Glasgow, was not involved in 4-H as a child, even though she lived on a farm, but her children are 4-Hers.

Mutter’s children got involved with 4-H after bringing home information from school about the program.

“We got started in it probably about four years ago,” she said.

Her children enjoyed 4-H, so she allowed them to continue.

On Friday morning her daughters, Bethany, 11, and Allie, 9, entered a 98-pound pumpkin they grew with help from their grandparents, Harold and Mabel Johnson, of Cave City.
