GLASGOW — A man who had been a fugitive from the Monroe County Jail since 2007 that was incarcerated on rape charges was caught Wednesday afternoon.
Casmino Calihua, 22, of 7575 Edmonton Road in Glasgow, was found after Barren County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a tip that he might have been wanted in another county.
Calihua was not at the Edmonton Road residence where the tip said he would be when deputies arrived, but returned before deputies left and was taken into custody.
He is being charged with no operators’ license, improper registration plates and failure of non-owner operator to maintain required insurance in Barren County.
When executing a background check, the sheriff’s office found that Calihua had escaped Monroe County custody while being transported back to the county jail from a court appearance. He ran from jail employees who were escorting him to the facility.
The jail is located a block from the courthouse. At the time of the escape inmates would be walked from the jail to the courthouse.
Calihua was served five Monroe County warrants; second-degree escape, first-degree rape, victim under 12 years of age and three counts of contempt of court — failure to appear. He is facing up to 20 years if convicted of the rape charge, which is a class A felony. The escape charge is a class D felony.
He is being held at the Barren County Correction Center on a $750 bond for the Barren County charges. He is still awaiting a court date on all of the charges.
Calihua’s initial charges were filed through Kentucky State Police in Columbia. There was no one from the post available Friday morning to comment about the investigation.
