Barren County School District receives $2.8M in grant

GLASGOW — Barren County Schools Superintendent Bo Matthews was beaming with pride when he announced Thursday that five of the district’s elementary schools had recently received the 21st Century Grant, an amount totaling more than $2.8 million.

“The children of Barren County Schools have been blessed today,” Matthews said at the press conference Thursday morning. “This is the largest educational grant received by the district.”

The five-year grant was distributed among Eastern Elementary, North Jackson Elementary, Park City Elementary, Temple Hill Elementary and Austin Tracy Elementary to fund after-school programs. Each of the schools developed partnerships with various community organizations to fulfill their particular after-school programs.

The 21st Century Grant is a U.S. Department of Education-funded grant to help high poverty and low-performing schools with after-school opportunities to help students meet state and local academic standards in core academic subjects. The grant also offers enrichment activities to complement regular academic programs, literacy programs and other educational services.

Austin Tracy Elementary had received the 21st Century Grant previously, and this grant cycle marked the renewal of their already implemented after-school programs. The school developed a partnership with Barren River Lake State Resort Park to enhance education in recreation and environmental science.

North Jackson and Park City Elementary both formed a partnership with the Western Kentucky University-Glasgow campus to increase school leadership and college and career readiness efforts.
