Austin Tracy school responds to threat

GLASGOW — Austin Tracy Elementary’s Tuesday school day was disrupted by the discovery of a threatening message in a bathroom, but no students were injured or considered to be in imminent danger.

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, a student reported to Principal Brian Clifford that there was a message on a bathroom stall door that said a bomb would go off at 1 p.m.

Clifford immediately contacted the district office and had the students evacuated to Mount Olivet Baptist Church, which is located adjacent to the school property, Superintendent Bo Matthews said. The Barren County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Tracy Volunteer Fire Department and school district personnel were called to the school to search for any evidence of a threat.

“There was no evidence that it was a credible threat, but swift procedures will always be taken to protect the safety of our students in any situation,” a Barren County school district press release stated.

Whether sincere or a hoax, Matthews said Austin Tracy and the district handled the threatening situation correctly. When students were evacuated, a One Call message was sent to Austin Tracy parents and updates were posted on social media and the school website, Matthews said.

“We followed all correct safety procedures and policies,” Matthews said.
