WKU expansion could get local help

GLASGOW — Just weeks after Western Kentucky University kicked off the 25th anniversary of the WKU-Glasgow campus, a movement is under way to help with a local expansion.

Three people representing the Industrial Development Economic Authority were with the Glasgow City Council Finance Committee for most of the committee’s nearly hour-long closed session that began almost immediately after the regular meeting was convened. Once the committee resumed the open meeting, Councilman Wendell Honeycutt made a motion that passed unanimously to create a resolution in favor of using the city’s bonding capacity to support constructing a new building for WKU at its current Glasgow campus contingent on being able to secure favorable financing.

The committee then proceeded with further business with no additional discussion of the WKU matter.

“We’d like to have Western expand here and we support that,” Honeycutt said after the meeting. “We want to see what can be worked out.”

The city’s next official step would be to have the full council, which is scheduled to meet next on March 11, pass the resolution.
