Betty Marie Bailey

GLASGOW — Betty Marie Bailey, 70, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

She was born in Barren County. Her father was the late Malcolm Mosby and her mother was the late Irene Greer who, along with her husband, Cobb Greer, raised Mrs. Bailey. She was a graduate of Ralph Bunch High School, a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons: Sidney Bailey (Iris) of Glasgow and David Bailey (Jennifer) of Glasgow; one daughter: Genia Mitchell (Billy) of Glasgow; a special son: Marcus Britt of Glasgow; 11 grandchildren: Dominic and Ashley Bailey, Tony and Aissia Bailey, Maurice and Keiloni Mitchell, Courtney Martin, Amber Martin, Michael Bradley, Sammy Bradley and Kennedy Bailey; five great-grandchildren: Kaden and Keira Bailey, Kamairie Mitchell, and Javid and Skylee Bailey; three sisters: Ann Hunter (William), Charlene Bailey (Winston) and Frances Stockton (Charles), all of Glasgow; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Powell Bailey; and a sister, Jeanette Massey.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, at 611 S. Lewis St. in Glasgow, with burial in the Barlow Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until time for the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home.

Charles W. Dyer

GAMALIEL — Charles W. Dyer, 79, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Monroe Health & Rehab in Tompkinsville.

He was the son of the late Willie Robert Dyer and Anice McDonald Dyer.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Strode Funeral Home, Gamaliel Chapel, with burial in Corinth Gardens in Macon County, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.



Grover Van Harlan

JACKSON, Tenn.— Funeral services for Grover Van Harlan will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 14, 20099, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, with Father Sean Ferrell officiating. There will be a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Mr. Harlan died Sept. 10, 2009, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1930, in Laurel Bluff, Ky., the son of the late Grover V. and Willie Ruie Travis Harlan.

He graduated in 1947 from Temple Hill High School and from Columbia Military Academy in 1949. Van left the farm in Kentucky to work with the gas pipe line all the way to California where he spent time working in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Sequoia National Park.

He was inducted in to the U.S. Army on March 1, 1951, and served during the Korean conflict and served the 43rd Infantry Division Co. E, in Germany. He was honorably discharged as 1st lieutenant on Oct. 18, 1955.

“This officer is tall and wiry in physique and has ability to withstand the rigors of field duty. He is neat, clean cut, makes friends easily, has a pleasing personality and shows military bearing in his appearance,” Officer Training School evaluation, Dec. 16, 1957.

He continued to serve his country in the U.S.Army Reserves, retired as a decorated lieutenant colonel in 1990.

Van was graduated in 1957 from Western Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture. He then worked in West Tennessee as a representative of Master Mix Feed Company.

He married Sally Johnson Harlan on Dec. 30, 1958, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. He was a licensed insurance agent and independent Jackson business man from 1962 through 2000 and was a believer in free enterprise.

Van cherished and loved being a charter member of Western Kentucky’s 13ers which later became the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Optimist & Civitan Clubs, the Advisory Committee National Harlan Family Association, the vestry at St. Luke’s, Men’s Literary Society, Coffee group, YMCA, running, the Hollywood Cemetery Association and his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by children, Edward Swint, Margaret Ann and Samuel Lee Harlan; and sister, Mary Ann Harlan.

Van is survived by his wife, Sally Johnson Harlan; son, Thomas Johnson and Denise Harlan of Gretna, La.; son, Jonathan Van and Fiona Harlan of Jackson, Tenn.; daughter, Elizabeth and Kevin Jerge of Jackson, Tenn.; grandchildren: Sarah and Kathryn Harlan, Alexandra, Niall, Georgina and Aidan Harlan, Elle and Annika Jerge; and brother, Ralph Travis Harlan.

Memorials may be made to: Hollywood Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 3975, Jackson, TN 38302-3975; or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 309 E. Baltimore, Jackson, TN 38301.

The family will receive friends at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Monday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. before the service.



Rondell Lee Powell

GLASGOW — Rondell Lee Powell, 70, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at his residence.

Born in Barren County, he was the son of the late James B. “Jimmy” Powell and Norma Spencer Powell. Mr. Powell was a former employee of Sorensen Mfg. Company in Glasgow.

Mr. Powell is survived locally by a nephew, Jonas Powell of Glasgow.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Aubrey Kenneth Powell and Charles Robert “Bobby” Powell.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Powell Cemetery. A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Howard Earl Ralston Jr.

CANMER — Howard Earl Ralston Jr., 62, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at his residence.

He was the son of the late Howard Earl Ralston and the late Katie Lee Hoover Ralston and husband of the late Isabelle (Scottie) Dean Ralston.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Brooks Funeral Home, Munfordville, with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Hardyville.

GLASGOW — Raymond Albert Fonner, 72, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in Munfordville Separate Baptist Church Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV.



GLASGOW — Brenda Joyce Nunn, 66, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at the Metcalfe County Nursing Home in Edmonton. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.
