Joseph Preston Edwards

BOWLING GREEN — Joseph Preston Edwards, 64, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at his residence.

The Edmonton native was a son of the late Ernest Harvey Edwards and Virgie Ruth Kidd Edwards. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patroula Paraponaire Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a tool and die maker with Holley Carburetor, an Army veteran serving in Viet Nam, and a member of Big Meadow Baptist Church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial in Big Meadow Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home and again from 9 a.m. to service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Southern Kentucky, 5872 Scottsville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42104; or to The American Cancer Society, 952 Fairview Avenue, Suite 4, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

Survivors include one son, Joseph Nicholas Edwards of Bowling Green; one daughter, Kendra Jo Back of Cape Coral, Fla.; one brother, Lynn Travis Edwards of Cave City; one sister, Joyce Edwards-Mathis of Glasgow; five grandchildren, Joshua D. Back of Cape Coral, Joseph Greer of Glasgow, Ina Greer of Bowling Green, Jon Back of Cape Coral and Regina Back of Cape Coral.



Lauretta Waller Edwards

BONNIEVILLE — Lauretta Waller Edwards, 69, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Woodland Terrace Health Care Facility in Elizabethtown.

She was the daughter of the late Chester Lee Waller and the late Edith Eunice Stewart.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Edwards.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with interment at Mount Vernon Cemetery, Bonnieville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today (Monday), at Brooks Funeral Home, Munfordville, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church.



Grover Van Harlan

JACKSON, Tenn.— Funeral services for Grover Van Harlan, 79, will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, with Father Sean Ferrell officiating. There will be a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Mr. Harlan died Sept. 10, 2009, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1930, in Laurel Bluff, Ky., the son of the late Grover V. and Willie Ruie Travis Harlan.

He graduated in 1947 from Temple Hill High School and from Columbia Military Academy in 1949. Van left the farm in Kentucky to work with the gas pipe line all the way to California where he spent time working in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Sequoia National Park.

He was inducted in to the U.S. Army on March 1, 1951, and served during the Korean conflict and served the 43rd Infantry Division Co. E, in Germany. He was honorably discharged as 1st lieutenant on Oct. 18, 1955.

“This officer is tall and wiry in physique and has ability to withstand the rigors of field duty. He is neat, clean cut, makes friends easily, has a pleasing personality and shows military bearing in his appearance,” Officer Training School evaluation, Dec. 16, 1957.

He continued to serve his country in the U.S.Army Reserves, retired as a decorated lieutenant colonel in 1990.

Van graduated in 1957 from Western Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture. He then worked in West Tennessee as a representative of Master Mix Feed Company.

He married Sally Johnson Harlan on Dec. 30, 1958, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. He was a licensed insurance agent and independent Jackson business man from 1962 through 2000 and was a believer in free enterprise.

Van cherished and loved being a charter member of Western Kentucky’s 13ers which later became the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Optimist & Civitan Clubs, the Advisory Committee National Harlan Family Association, the vestry at St. Luke’s, Men’s Literary Society, Coffee group, YMCA, running, the Hollywood Cemetery Association and his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by children, Edward Swint, Margaret Ann and Samuel Lee Harlan; and sister, Mary Ann Harlan.

Van is survived by his wife, Sally Johnson Harlan; son, Thomas Johnson and Denise Harlan of Gretna, La.; son, Jonathan Van and Fiona Harlan of Jackson, Tenn.; daughter, Elizabeth and Kevin Jerge of Jackson, Tenn.; grandchildren: Sarah and Kathryn Harlan, Alexandra, Niall, Georgina and Aidan Harlan, Elle and Annika Jerge; and brother, Ralph Travis Harlan.

Memorials may be made to: Hollywood Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 3975, Jackson, TN 38302-3975; or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 309 E. Baltimore, Jackson, TN 38301.

The family will receive friends at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Monday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. before the service.



Asa Shelton

COLUMBIA — Asa Shelton, 97, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Greensburg.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Tillie” Wood Shelton; one son: Dan (Montie) Shelton; one grandson: Richard B. Shelton; and three step-daughters: Sue Zanco, Julie Bosworth and Margaret Carter.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, Columbia, with burial in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation is after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Columbia United Methodist Church; Asa, Allie & David Shelton Scholarship Fund or Dorothy “Tillie” Shelton Scholarship Fund, both at Lindsey Wilson College. These may be sent to the funeral home at 200 Campbellsville St., Columbia, KY 42728.
