Jeanette Elizabeth Tolopka

SANFORD, Fla. – Jeanette Elizabeth Tolopka, 85, formerly of Glasgow, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in Sanford, Florida.

She was the daughter of Rudolph Juren and Elizabeth Reiter Juren, and was married to Walter Tolopka for 55 years before his death in 2008.

Jean is survived by three sons, Stephen Tolopka, of Portland, Ore.; Kenneth Tolopka, of Sanford, Fla.; and Daniel Tolopka, of Sevierville, Tenn.; and two grandsons, Nicholas Tolopka and Kristopher Tolopka.

Jean was born in Queens, New York and lived in New York City. She worked as office manager / bookkeeper for P. Sorenson Manufacturing where she met and married Walter in 1953, then became a homemaker and mother of three.  In 1961, the couple followed Sorenson Manufacturing on its move to Glasgow, Kentucky—a seismic change for born-and-raised big-city New Yorkers.  For the next 51 years, Jean lived in Glasgow in “the house with the old-time car painted on the garage door” until she recently moved to live with her son Kenneth’s family in Florida.

Jean was a long-time active member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church. She was an excellent cook, an avid reader, crocheter and knitter, and could often be found with crossword puzzle book in hand. Jean loved to travel, vacationing over the years in the Northeastern states, the Carolinas, Florida, New Mexico, the West Coast, Alaska, Canada, Europe, the Panama Canal and Costa Rica, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

In her later years, Jean divided her time between her home in Glasgow and her sons’ homes in Florida and Oregon. It was in Oregon that she became an enthusiastic supporter of The Beat Goes On Marching Band, an all-adult marching band co-founded by son Steve and daughter-in-law Janet, and keenly followed the band’s many activities. She loved spending time with her grandsons and took great pride in their accomplishments.

Jean was a loving and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her departure leaves a deep hole in our lives.

No visitation will be held before graveside services at All Souls Cemetery in Sanford, Fla., on Friday, Nov. 2.  Expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial donations to The Beat Goes On Marching Band (a 501(c)(3) organization) at www.thebeatgoesonmb.org.
