GLASGOW — Frances Edwards

GLASGOW — Frances Rootes Edwards, a gentle and kind spirit, returned to her origins Thursday night, Jan. 19, 2012, at her home as the result of an illness. She was 75 years old. Frances was the daughter of the late Mary Hereford Lykins and Edgar Rootes, both artists who met at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Art. After 13 years of marriage, Frances, their only child was born Dec. 21, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her grandparents were the late Isaac Newton Lykins and Mollie Hereford Hatcher of Glasgow. She had lived in Glasgow since 1945.

At age 13, Frances identified with the First United Methodist Church of Glasgow and remained a faithful member until her death. She had served as president of all three women’s missionary circles at the church and had conducted a Wednesday morning Bible Study for several years until she became ill. Frances enjoyed being part of the congregation’s visitation team through which she visited many persons in hospitals, nursing homes and private homes.

Frances was a member of the Glasgow High School class of 1953. She attended Centre College of Kentucky where she earned a degree in English and History in 1957.

As a student at Glasgow High School she was a noted tennis player and was the Glasgow City Champion. She also played tennis for Centre College, earning numerous trophies. She was a champion table tennis player in her youth, winning the Kentucky championship as well as the Mid-South Table Tennis Tournament in Memphis, where she played on live television.

For a time, Frances taught English at Glasgow High School. She later taught part-time and had taught in every Glasgow school and in every grade at some point. She was noted for maintaining high expectations of her students during her teaching years. A life-long lover of good music, Frances was an accomplished pianist, having studied under Mrs. Alanson Trigg and Mrs. Fielding Boles. She joined the Glasgow Ladies Matinee Musicale in 1957 and remained a member at the time of her death.  

Frances was a friend to animals throughout her life and was known for caring for animals in need. While she had many pets throughout her life, she was most fond of her manx cat, “Baby,” who preceded her in death. She was a member of the Jefferson Homemakers Club.

On September 1, 1972, Frances married Willard Edwards, a widower. Mr. Edwards preceded her in death in 1992. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved aunt, Emma Lykins Wood; her uncles John and his wife Modine, Herman, Bruce, Garrett and Owen Lykins.

Frances is survived by many faithful friends and two cousins, John Scott Lykins of Memphis and Gloria Lykins Adams of Martin, Tennessee.

Visitation for Frances Rootes Edwards will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home; followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

Haskel Froedge

EDMONTON — Haskel Ewing Froedge, 80, of Edmonton, died Wednesday, Jan.18, 2012, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital. He was a Army veteran and son of the late Paul and Tina Ball Froedge. He was a former security guard at Sumitomo Electric Wiring.

He is survived by his wife, Bernia Sparks Froedge, of Edmonton; one son, Barry Froedge and wife Pat of Edmonton; one daughter, Sandy Froedge of Edmonton; a stepson, Herb Sparks and wife Jan of Edmonton; a grandson, Jeremy Froedge; two step-grandsons, Seth and James (Janine) Sparks; two step-granddaughters,  Tabatha (Aaron) England and Brittany Brown; three step-great-grandchildren,  Miranda England, Chase England and Jonas Sparks; a sister-in-law, Leina Janes and a special grand dog “Boo.”

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Froedge.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in Missionary Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m.  Saturday and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



Marguerite Marshall

SANFORD, Fla. — Marguerite Jane Jones Marshall, 87, peacefully passed on to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at Gracious Age Assisted Living in Sanford. She escaped her battle with COPD by quietly slipping away in the morning while relaxing in her favorite chair. Marguerite was born in Pixley, Cali., on July 1, 1924, to William Hershel and Leva Ellen Williams Jones. She was the devoted wife to George Andrew Marshall for nearly 60 years when he passed on Dec. 17, 2001. They are survived by their two sons, G. Richard Marshall of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and W. Penn Marshall and his wife Deborah of Orlando, Fla. Richard has two sons, Nathan (Cheri) Marshall and John Marshall and two granddaughters, Tarah Marshall and Hope Marshall, all of Detroit, Mich. Penn and Deborah have four sons and three daughters, Andy Marshall (Deceased), Dean Marshall of Orlando, Fla., Ginny Marshall of College Park, Fla., Deah (Geoff) Goodman of West Palm Beach, Fla., Adam (Jessie) Marshall of Geneva, Fla., Brian (Michelle) Frink of Clermont, Fla., Erin (Blake) Rosen of Singapore, and eight grandchildren, Katie Marshall, Orlando, Fla., Hunter and Hannah Frink, Clermont Fla., Geoffrey and Gia Goodman, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mallory, Paxton and Harlow Rosen of Singapore.

 Marguerite had two sisters and two brothers that have preceded her in Heaven, Mary Bittie Simmons, Wanda Houchens, Lester Jones and Clifton Jones all of Glasgow. She is survived by one brother, Rev. Bill Jones and his wife Dottie of Gallatin, Tenn. She had eight nephews and 11 nieces.

 Marguerite was affectionately known as Aunt Margie to her nieces and nephews; Marty to her friends of Northville, Mich., and Nana to her grandchildren. Many of her friends and family have gone on before her and are waiting at the Pearly Gates to welcome her, just as she’ll be there to welcome us.

 Marguerite lived in California, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Michigan, Georgia, and Florida. A devoted Christian, she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, missionary leader and prayer warrior. In the work force she worked as a farmer, retail sales person, factory worker, credit union teller, loan officer, apartment manager and receptionist.

 Marguerite has requested that in lieu of flowers all donations be made to a ministry that is close to her heart, Sierra Leone. This ministry is multifaceted with the JESUS Film, an eye hospital, national evangelists, pastors, teachers all spreading God’s good Word and rejoicing in it. Please make checks payable to:

 Her funeral celebration will be 10 a.m. Saturday at United Church of the Nazarene, 1320 South Chickasaw Trail, FL 32825. Pastor Robert Yates will bring a spiritually encouraging message. Interment will be at Orlando Memorial Gardens in Apopka, FL.



Nick Williams

SCOTTSVILLE — Nick Williams, 30, of Scottsville, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. The Scottsville, native was a co-owner of T&N Pools and Parts, a 1999 graduate of Allen County-Scottsville High School, a Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop #132 and member of Beech Grove General Baptist Church. He was a son of Timothy Harrison Williams and Deborah Ann Herrington Williams, who survive.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Brandy Williams, Scottsville; two daughters, Joliene Nicole Williams and Taylor Beth Williams, both of Scottsville; one brother, Evan Williams, Scottsville; maternal grandparents, Doug and Margaret Herrington, Scottsville; paternal grandfather, Ben Williams, Glasgow; two uncles, Steven Herrington and wife, Robin and Greg Williams and wife, Donna, all of Scottsville; two cousins, Paul Herrington and Christina Williams, both of Scottsville.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Bonnie Williams.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at Goad Funeral Home with Brother Scott Cline officiating and burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery. Carol Canfield

GLASGOW — Carol Huizenga Canfield, 88, of Glasgow, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at NHC Healthcare facility. Born in Chicago, IL she was the daughter of the late James S. and Ethel Ferm Lees. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years Irvin L. Huizenga, husband of seven years Albert Leon Canfield, an infant daughter Lyn Alys Huizenga and a granddaughter Michelle Lavaty. Mrs. Canfield was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as organist and member of the choir. She was also a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Glasgow Musicale and was one of the founders of Olympia Fields United Methodist Church near Chicago, IL. Survivors include five sons Leslie I. Huizenga of Merrillville, IN, David L. Huizenga (Gloria) of Munds Park, AZ, Randall A. Huizenga (Nikki) of Salt Lake City, UT. Cary L. Huizenga (Linda) of Glasgow and Richard J. Canfield (Elaina) of Hudson, FL; 11 grandchildren Kristie Allen (Dustin), Bonnie Huizenga, Cameron Huizenga, Vanessa Lavaty (Scott Adland), Jennifer Smead (Eric), Joshua Dyer, Emily Huizenga, April Huizenga, Lauren Huizenga, Nicholas Sanger and Emily Sanger; four great-grandchildren Mathew, David, Alecia and Joshua Allen also survive.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sunday and 8 until 11 a.m. Monday at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home and continue at noon until time for the service Monday at the church.
