James Howard Allen

EL PASO, Texas — James Howard Allen, 87, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso.

The Glasgow native entered the Navy in 1938, along with friends, T.J. Jewell and “Snooks” Spillman. He was on the USS Lexington in the battle of Coral Sea, when it was attacked in World War II. He left the Navy and later joined the Army. After 20 years of service, he worked at Fort Bliss with Civil Service as an electronics technician and retired in the late 1980s. A full military burial was held at Fort Bliss, Texas, on April 8.

James Howard was the son of the late Roger Allen and Nancy Crenshaw Allen. He was given his middle name from the doctor who delivered him, Dr. C.C. Howard of Glasgow.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Hicks Allen; a grandson, Brian Bradley; brothers, Cecil and Richard Allen; and sisters, Ruby Young and Mary Frances Pemberton.

A memorial gathering of friends and family, organized by Jenny Morrison, sister-in-law, and Jennie Young, niece, will be Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Glasgow at New Salem United Methodist Church, 1307 New Salem Road, just off U.S. 68/Ky. 80.

Survivors include a son, Phillip Allen of El Paso; a daughter, Sheila Allen of El Paso, and a son, David Allen and his wife, Cathy, of Walton; one granddaughter, Jennifer; one sister, Margaret Hamilton of Tampa, Fla.; many nieces and nephews, as well as relatives and friends in Barren, Allen, Warren, Simpson and Metcalfe counties.



Pearl Mansfield Collins

LOUISVILLE — Pearl Mansfield Collins, 90, formerly of Glasgow, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Louisville.

She was a member of the Poplar Grove Baptist Church and a retired employee of A.F. Crow Funeral Home.

Survivors include nine nieces: Barbara Briggs, Margery Hines (Gardner), Flora Smotherman (James), Shirley Mansfield and Betsy Brawner (the Rev. Wallace), Mary Ellen Mansfield and Stella Stevens, all of Louisville, Charlene Bell and Marie Mansfield, Detroit, Mich.; three nephews: Leo and Donnie Mansfield, Detroit Mich., Russell Mansfield (Nikki) Louisville,; sisters-in-law: Anna Mansfield and Christine Mansfield, Louisville; and a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Barlow Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Nova Witty Moore

GLASGOW — Nova Witty Moore, 92, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at NHC Healthcare Facility in Glasgow.

The Barren County native was the daughter of the late James Rastus Witty and Mary Isabell Hood Witty and wife of the late Philip R. Moore. She worked in the lunchroom at Happy Valley Elementary School for many years and attended the Temple Baptist Church in Glasgow.

Survivors include four children: Linda G. Settle (John) of Temple Hill, Jackie D. Moore (Marie) of Hopkinsville, Gary L. Moore (Joyce) of Glasgow and Marla M. Calvert (Wayne) of Conover, N.C.; six grandchildren: Jeff A. Settle (Honor) of Temple Hill, Joy Settle Denton (Dana) of Bowling Green, Jason D. Moore of Quantico, Va., Michael C. Moore (Guergana) of Bowling Green, Jonathan E. Calvert of Washington D.C., and Byron P. Calvert of Conover, N.C.; five great-granddaughters: Ella, Mollie, Sally and Priscilla Settle of Temple Hill and Sydney Denton of Bowling Green. Also surviving are three sisters: Mary P. Stephens, Thelma (Cricket) Huckabee and Ruth Edwards, and one sister-in-law: Wanda W. Witty, all of Glasgow.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Saundra Fay and Carol Ann Moore; four brothers, Dennis, Bernice, Alpha and Hascal Witty; and two sisters, Effie Barrett and Velma Chenoweth.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Poplar Log Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 4 until 8 p.m. and on Sunday until time for the service.

Warren Parker

BURKESVILLE — Warren Parker, 67, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Cumberland County Hospital after an illness.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Ann Parker of Burkesville; and his mother, Dessie Parker of Brazil, Ind.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at Community Full Gospel Church in Albany with burial in the Smith Grove Cemetery in Cumberland County. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home of Burkesville is in charge of funeral arrangements.



Parris Perdue

BURKESVILLE — Parris Perdue, 87, a resident of Cumberland Valley Manor, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Cumberland County Hospital after an illness.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include three sons: Randy Perdue and Brad Perdue, both of Burkesville, and Junior Perdue of Bardstown; five daughters: Betty Perdue Myers and Brenda Branham, both of Glasgow, Judy Norris and Margaret Smith, both of Burkesville, and Donna Wilson of Edmonton; two sisters: Bernice Reagan of Glasgow, and Bertie Perdue of Albany; a special niece, Holly Moreland of Albany; 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home in Burkesville with burial in the Highway Cemetery in Clinton County with military honors. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home.



Ray Rich

TOMPKINSVILLE — Ray Rich, 92, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Monroe County Medical Center in Tompkinsville.

He was the son of the late Millard Bedford Rich and Lou Ella Grace Rich and husband of the late Mary Alyne Poindexter Rich.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Strode Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with burial in Monroe County Memorial Lawn. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home.



George O. Shipley Sr.

EDMONTON — George O. Shipley Sr., 85, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his home.

He was born in Oklahoma, the son of the late Lonnie and Edna Bullard Shipley. He was a World War II Army veteran and was formerly employed as the grounds keeper at Kentucky Hills Golf Course.

Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Mann Cemetery in Metcalfe County. Visitation will be from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Butler Funeral Home.

He is survived by three sons: George Shipley Jr. and Gregg Shipley, both of Edmonton, and Gearld Shipley of Indiana; two sisters: Geneva Slinker of Hartford and Bobbie Shipley; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Lou Shipley; two brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.

Elmer Eugene ‘Gene’ Wheet

FOUNTAIN RUN — Elmer Eugene “Gene” Wheet, 78, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

He was born in Barren County, the son of the late James Elmer "Dick” Wheet and Alma Faye Eaton Wheet. Gene was a farmer and a former corporate airplane pilot for Brandeis Machinery in Louisville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of Robinson Lodge No. 226 F&AM; in Louisville for 49 years. Locally he was a member of the Glasgow Rotary Club for many years.

He is survived by five sisters: Patricia Houchens of Bowling Green, Beatrice Berry of Louisville, Effie DeFevers of Kileen, Texas, Juanita Richardson of Taylorsville, and Barbara Janes of Edinburg, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jane Shaw Wheet; and two brothers, Joseph Lawton Wheet and Gordon Thomas Wheet.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with cremation to follow. Burial of his cremated remains will be in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 until 9 p.m. and continue on Monday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home. A Masonic service is being planned for Sunday night at the funeral home.

GLASGOW — Florence Elizabeth Blankenship, 75, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Friday) at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with cremation to follow.



CAVE CITY — Dorothy Gossett, 84, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Cave City Cemetery. Visitation continues Friday at Bob Hunt Funeral Chapel, Cave City. The body will be moved to the church Saturday for visitation after 9 a.m. until time of services.



SMITHS GROVE — The Rev. Henry H. Harriford, 79, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Owens Chapel Baptist Church with burial in Barber Cemetery. Visitation will be at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home on Friday from 4 until 9 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until time for the services.



TOMPKINSVILLE — Frances Proffitt, 98, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at her home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Friday) at Yokley-Trible Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with burial in Monroe County Memorial Lawn.
