BOWLING GREEN — James M. Edwards, 69, died April 30, 2009, at his residence.

He was the son of the late Ramie Edwards and Mary E. Ledmon and husband of the late Lillian Gray Edwards.

No services or visitation are scheduled. Burial will be in Stoney Point Cemetery.

Tempest Estes England

GLASGOW — Tempest Estes England, 81, died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Moat and Grace Compton Estes. She was a retired LPN. She worked at Howard Clinic from the mid-1950s until its closing, at which time she became an avid volunteer with the Ladies Auxillary at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

Survivors include one son: Gary Blaine England and his wife, Kathleen W. England, of Glasgow; three grandsons: Jarred Blaine England, Dylan Edwin England and Gary Alexander England; her sister-in-law: Sheila Estes; one nephew: Steve Estes; one niece: Glenda Harris; three great-nieces; one great-nephew; and one great-great niece.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

Hallie Mae Meredith

MUNFORDVILLE – Hallie Mae Meredith, 70, of Munfordville, died Friday, May 8, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

Jeanette B. Sexton

ILLINOIS – Jeanette B. Sexton, 82, of Bradley, Ill., formerly of Glasgow, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, Ill., after a lengthy illness.

Jeanette was born on March 24, 1927, in Edmonton and was the daughter of the late Edis and Ermon Harper of Edmonton. Jeanette was married to Dewey Reed Sexton on May 14, 1944, at East Fork Baptist Church in Edmonton. Jeanette was a homemaker (her fried apple pies will be missed), enjoyed southern gospel music, followed current events and spent countless hours in telephone conversations.

Surviving are two sons and their wives: Claude and Betty Sexton of Hodgkins, Ill., and Reverend Rick and Glenna Sexton of Bradley, Ill.; two daughters and one son-in-law: Donna Stallings of McDonough, Ga., and Brenda and John Madoni of Hampton, Ga. Two brothers and three sisters survive: Clayton Harper of Valley Station, Elam Harper of Arizona, Louise Garrett and Dorothy Harper, both of Edmonton, and Margaret Barrett of Randolph. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Eileen Tucker, Jeffery Sexton, Stephanie DaSilva, Michelle Partin, Angie Benton, Jeanetta Madoni, Erica Madoni, Marc Sexton and Jared Sexton. Eight great-grandchildren also survive: Ashley, Alexis, Kristen, Bridgette, Deanna, Devin, Lindy and Allison.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey; her parents, Edis and Ermon Harper; a grandson, Scottie Chapman; a son-in-law, Wesley Stallings; and her sister, Priscilla Robinson.

In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were 7 p.m. Friday at Butler Funeral Home with graveside services at 10 a.m. Saturday at Society Hill Cemetery.



Lori Mattingly Shaw

LOUISVILLE – Lori Mattingly Shaw, 44, of Louisville, passed away on May 5, 2009, in Monterey, Calif., where she and her family were living while her husband Lt. Col. Jerry L. Shaw was serving a temporary activation in the United States Army Reserves.

Lori was born in Lexington on March 30, 1965. She was a graduate of Breckinridge County High School, received a bachelor’s degree in Education from Western Kentucky University and earned a master's degree in Education from the University of Louisville. She taught school for 12 years at St. Gabriel Catholic School in Louisville.

She retired temporarily from teaching in 1998 to pursue a career as a stay-at-home mom to her daughters, a job she passionately loved. Lori was a very gregarious and happy person, never met a stranger and made lasting friendships wherever she lived. She cared about people and was always giving of herself to help others.

Even in death, Lori showed her care and concern for others by donating her organs to be used so others could live and see. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where she volunteered her time and talent for the school.

Lori is survived by her husband: Lt. Col. Jerry Shaw, and her beautiful daughters: Susan and Lillie Shaw of Louisville; her parents: Mack and Dolores Mattingly of Hardinsburg; her sister and brother-in-law: Stacey and Jim Olivia of Louisville; and her brother and sister-in-law: Kevin and Adair Mattingly of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her brother: Bryan Mattingly.

Lori was a special aunt affectionately know as “Ori” to Alex, Austin and Taylor Olivia, Sam, Luke and Gabe Mattingly. She touched their lives in so many ways.

A funeral Mass to celebrate her life will be Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 12 p.m. EDT at St. Romuald Catholic Church in Hardinsburg with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg on Tuesday from 3 to 9 p.m. EDT and after 9:30 a.m.EDT Wednesday.

Annie Leoma Spillman

GLASGOW — Annie Leoma Spillman, 87, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at her residence.

Born in Barren County, she was the daughter of the late Roy Page Ellis and Roxie Houchens Ellis. Mrs. Spillman was a member of Pleasant Point Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Harry Leonard Spillman of Glasgow; four daughters: Martha Shirley (Larry), Dottye Proffitt (Tommy), Susan Elmore (Richard) and Kathy Wiley (David), all of Glasgow; a son: David Spillman of Glasgow; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Ruby Ellis of Etoile and Violet Spillman of Glasgow; a brother-in-law: Hayward Spillman Jr. of Etoile; several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Edna Earl Hurt; and a brother, Willie Bryant Ellis.

Docia Ellen Wheat

GLASGOW – Docia Ellen Wheat, 85, of Glasgow, died Saturday, May 10, 2009, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital.

Born in Barren County, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleve and Effie York Emmitt and the wife of the late Herman Lee Wheat. Mrs. Wheat was a homemaker and member of the Mount Tabor Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons: Billy Wheat (Betty Mae) of Cave City, Rondal Paul Wheat (Sandra Gayle) of Nashville, Tenn., and Marcell Wheat (Lisa) of Hiseville; one daughter: Bernell Farley (Kay) of Glasgow; one adopted son, John W. Bradley of Glasgow; two sisters: Ethel Wooten and Effie Emmitt, both of Glasgow; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by eight children: Roger Gail Wheat, Charles Lee Wheat, Herman Eugene Wheat, Eddie Rollin Wheat, Robert Lee Wheat, Olla Mae Wheat, Ruth Wheat and Barbara Ann Wheat; one sister: Betty Hagan; and three brothers: William, Lawrence and Leonard Emmitt.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Clack-Emmitt Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the funeral home.
