Nellie Dean Downing Barton

HOLLAND — Nellie Dean Downing Barton, 102, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late John Aldridge Downing and Nannie Dee Siddens Downing and wife of the late Tommy Clemmons Barton.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Holland with burial in Mount Zion Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at T.W. Crow & Son Funeral Home in Scottsville, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church until service time.

Strode Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, is in charge of arrangements.



Danny Ray ‘Dan’ Cravens

SMITHS GROVE — Danny Ray “Dan” Cravens, 63, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital in Bowling Green.

A son of the late Fred and Madell Smith Cravens, he was a former truck driver and mechanic and a member of the Coral Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters: Patricia Harman and her husband, Lee, of Texas, and Alicia Buttress and her husband, Oran, of Oklahoma; his partner: Inez Parsley of Smiths Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Cordell Cravens.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the funeral home.

Geneva Mae Harper

EDMONTON — Geneva Mae Harper, 83, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow.

She was the daughter of the late Marvin and Della Jessee Wilson. When she was 13 months of age, her mother died and she became the daughter of Claude and Stella Jessee Harper. She married Clarence Harper on Sept. 12, 1942. He preceded her in death in 2003.

She was a member of the Society Hill Missionary Baptist Church and was a former employee of Topps Safety Apparel for 47 years.

Survivors include her six children: Raymond (Melissa) Harper of Columbus, Ind., Velma (Clifton) Johnson of Glasgow, Rondal Harper of Edmonton, Linda (Terry) Crossland of Columbus, Ind., Margie Harper of Radcliff, and Carolyn (Glenn) Shirley of Glasgow. She is also survived by a brother: Garland (Alice) Wilson of Columbus, Ind.; two sisters: Louvern Lee of Columbia, and Annie Froedge of Columbus, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren and two step great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Kevin Harper; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Harper; son-in-law, Jimmy England; five brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for Geneva Harper will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in Society Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today (Tuesday) and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

John Woodford Crump

BOWLING GREEN — John Woodford Crump, 83, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at his residence. He was the son of the late Willie Crump and Angie Barron Crump.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel, with burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today (Tuesday) and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



Janice C. Pedigo

CAVE CITY — Janice C. Pedigo, 74, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Hart County Health Care, Horse Cave.

She was the daughter of the late Delbert and Eutora Hinson Kellams. Survivors include her husband, Wendell N. Pedigo, Cave City.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at the Bob Hunt Funeral Chapel with burial in Cave City Cemetery.



Rutha Buckley Tenry

GLASGOW — Rutha Buckley Tenry, 87, died Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2009, at NHC Healthcare Facility in Glasgow.

She was born in Monroe County, the daughter of the late Frank Gentry and Pauline Green Gentry Anderson.

Formerly of the Temple Hill community, she was known as a successful business owner. She owned and operated Rutha’s Beauty Salon on East Main Street in Glasgow for 42 years until her retirement and, until recently, managed several rental properties in the Glasgow area. As a hairdresser, she served as a mentor to many young hairdressers in the surrounding area at the beginning of their own careers.

She was more than an aunt or great-aunt, but was like a mother and grandmother figure to her niece, her nephews and their children. She was very devoted to her family, friends, church and community. Rutha was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a current and active member in local organizations until her recent series of strokes in March of 2009.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1953, was named Past Matron in 1992 and was named lifetime member in 2005. She was a member of the Glasgow Business and Professional Women’s Club since the early 1960s where she served as president in 1974-75. Rutha was also a member of the Glasgow Garden Club for 15 years and a member of the Eva Dean Kemp Circle at First United Methodist Church.

The things she enjoyed most were spending time with family and friends, traveling and gardening.

Survivors include a very close niece, Judy Wood Houchens (Jimmy); two nephews: Curtis Wood (Shirley Beck) and Mike Wood (Linda); five great-nieces: Stacey Houchens Owen (Tommy), Amy Wood Key (Mark), Nicole Houchens Jones (Beau), Michelle Wood Murphy (Daryl) and Mica Wood; one great-nephew: Joshua Wood; three great-great-nephews and three great-great nieces; her dear friend and caretaker, Bunny Wells; a step-daughter: Marcia Tenry Abbott (Fred) of Cypress, Texas; two step-grandsons: Justin and Nicholas Abbott; and several nieces and nephews from her first marriage to James Buckley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Wilson Tenry; her sister, Gladys Gentry Wood; a nephew, Jerry Wood; a niece, Frankie Michelle Wood; and her first husband, James Buckley.

The family would like to thank the staff at NHC who treated her like family.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Eastern Star Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and the public is welcome to attend.

James Clayton Wilkerson

LOUISVILLE — James Clayton Wilkerson, 85, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at Kindred Hospital in Louisville.

He was a Hart County native and retired from the U.S. Navy with 28 years of service and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 13 years. He was a member of the Heartsong Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 37 years.

Clayton was preceded in death by his parents, James Asberry and Ersie Kinney Wilkerson; a sister, Mary Harp and husband, Otis; a nephew, Howard Harp; and a daughter-in-law, Jackie Wilkerson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years and best friend, Bertha McCubbins Wilkerson; two sons: Steven Wilkerson and wife, Debbie, and Paul Wilkerson; two brothers: Earl D. Wilkerson and wife, Peggy, and Laymon Wilkerson and wife, Linda; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Clayton Wilkerson were noon today (Tuesday) in the chapel of Sego Funeral Home, Munfordville, with burial in the McCubbins Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heartsong Cumberland Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 6322 Labor Lane, Louisville, KY 40291.
