GLASGOW — Francis Marion Bennett III

RICHMOND – Francis Marion Bennett III (Frank), 83, died unexpectedly, Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at the Richmond Place Rehabilitation Center, after a brief illness.

A native of Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late John C.F. and Foster Taliaferro Bennett. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Billy and James Bennett.

He spent seven years of his childhood with his family in Puerto Rico before attending Virginia Episcopal School and graduating from Warsaw High School, Warsaw, Va. He attended The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., before volunteering to join the armed forces in Korea. He was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, 1st Marine Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded during the Battle for the Punchbowl in North Korea on Sept. 11, 1951. After a nine-month recovery in a military hospital, Mr. Bennett started his career with Commercial Solvents in Horse Cave, Ky.

His long career included positions in Lexington, St. Louis, Atlanta, Charleston, S.C., Naugatuck, Conn., and Glasgow. For the last 20 years of his career, he was President and CEO of Southern Explosives Corporation, Glasgow, and afterwards retired to Lexington.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Barbara Gaines Bennett; his daughter, Kay Foster Bennett Saffari (Behnam Saffari); his son, Frank Gaines Bennett (Jill Peterson Bennett); and four grandchildren, Cyrus Saffari, Susie Saffari, Katherine Bennett and Francis Marion Bennett IV.

Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 150 East High Street, Lexington, and from 10 to 12 noon Friday, Dec. 21, at Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster, Ky.

The funeral will be at 12 noon Friday at Ramsey Funeral Home, with burial immediately after in Lancaster Cemetery. The family requests donations to the U.S. Marines Wounded Warrior Regiment in lieu of flowers.

Jerry R. Bush

LOUISVILLE – Jerry R. Bush, 69, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2012.

He was born in Louisville, March 22, 1943, to the late Harlan Bush and Tommie Sanders Bush.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Muriel Skinner Bush.

Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. EST, Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, and 9 to 11 a.m. EST, Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Valley View Baptist Church in Louisville. The funeral service will be Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. EST, at Valley View Baptist Church, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Park City.

Arrangements are by Patton Funeral Home, Park City Chapel.



Anthony ‘Tony’ Poland

TOMPKINSVILLE – Anthony “Tony” Poland, 51, of Tompkinsville, passed away Monday, Dec. 17 2012, at his home.

Tony was born in Tompkinsville, on Feb. 19, 1961, a son of the late Jean Irene (Chappell) and Ed Poland. He was in the U. S. Navy and was a concrete finisher.

Tony is survived by one son, Jackie (Shannon) Poland, of Tompkinsville; a brother, Richard “Stich” Poland, of Tompkinsville; one granddaughter, Ellie Poland and her life partner, Antonia Mink.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Michael Poland.

Funeral services will be conducted at Yokley Trible Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, with Mark Kendall and Larry Graves officiating.

Visitation is Wednesday Dec. 19, 2012, 2 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial in Monroe County Memorial Lawn.

 

Judy Hackman Rathbun

BOWLING GREEN – Judy Hackman Rathbun, 72, of Bowling Green, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late Wellington Hackman and Robertie Ellen Work Hackman, and wife of the late Robert Wells Rathbun.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4655 Russellville Road, Bowling Green.

Hardy and Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green is in charge of the arrangements.

TOMPKINSVILLE – Marcia Jean Proffitt Bartley, 64, of Tompkinsville, died Sunday, Dec.16, 2012, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. Visitation is in progress at Strode Funeral Home in Tompkinsville. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in Monroe County Memorial Lawn in Tompkinsville. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.



GLASGOW – Leah “Margaret” Cummings Byrd, 80, of Glasgow, died Dec. 16, 2012, at Greenview Hospital, after a short illness. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home, with burial in Hiseville Cemetery. Visitation is in progress at the funeral home.



GLASGOW – Barbara Jane Coats, 68, of Glasgow, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Barlow Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



GLASGOW – Robert David “Robby” Grinstead, 65, of Glasgow, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Barren County Health Care, after a long, brave battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, with military honors provided by D.A.V. Chapter 20 of Glasgow. Visitation is in progress. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or Cedar Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 4241 Roseville Rd., Glasgow, Ky. 42141.



TOMPKINSVILLE – I.C. Short, 91, of Tompkinsville, died Sunday, Dec.16, 2012, at Monroe Health and Rehab Center. Funeral services at Yokley Trible Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, will be noon Wednesday. Visitation is in progress. Burial will be in Monroe County Memorial Lawn.
