James O. Johnson
CAVE CITY — James Oren Johnson, 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital, Glasgow.
The Barren County native was the son of the late Emmett and Rona Sanders Johnson and the widower of Mora Sturgeon Johnson. He was a retired maintenance employee of Mallory’s in Glasgow, a member of Little Hope Baptist Church and Cave City Masonic Lodge No. 790.
Survivors include two daughters: Sheila (Doug) Parker, and Vickie Johnson, both of Glasgow; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Johnson.
Funeral services, with the Rev. Danny Sexton officiating, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at Bob Hunt Funeral Chapel, Cave City, with burial in Cave City Cemetery. Masonic rites will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 7 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home will be after 2 p.m. today (Wednesday).

Charles Lapham
GLASGOW — Charles Lapham, 75, of Winn School Road, Glasgow, passed away at his home at noon, Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, from lymphoma.
Charlie was born in Fort Edward and grew up in Glens Falls, N.Y. He lived many years in Lincoln Park, N.J., and for the last 20 years lived in Glasgow. Charlie graduated from Clarkson University with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked many years for Standard Motors Products in Long Island City, N.Y. He was transferred to Sorenson Ind in Glasgow in 1990, where he retired.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Panama Canal Zone.
Charlie valued honesty, integrity, hard work and was at times a self-described connoisseur of silliness.
He was never without a project. He had a lifelong interest in science, particularly botany, and proudly developed a taxonomy and collections database called Index Kentuckiensis which is in use at several universities and herberia. One of his favorite places to observe native flora was at Nature Conservancy sanctuaries, as well as Mammoth Cave National Park and Brigadoon Nature Preserve.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arlene Lapham; brother, Jerome Lapham of Bridport, Vt.; five children: Peter Lapham and wife Judy of Glasgow, Suzanne Zaher and husband Douglas of Queensbury, N.Y., Thomas Lapham and wife Janelle of Glasgow, Benjamin Lapham and companion Joy Kaczmarek of Glens Falls, and Jonathan Lapham of Glasgow; four grandchildren: Garrett Lapham of Glasgow, Jerome Lapham and Kaitlyn Lapham of Lake Luzerne, N.Y., and Andrew Zaher of Queensbury, N.Y.
There will be gatherings across the country for friends and family to celebrate and toast Charlie’s life on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. CT. The local celebration will be held at the home of Arlene Lapham, 16 Winn School Road, Glasgow.
In accordance with Charlie’s wishes, his body has been donated to science at The University of Louisville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to The Nature Conservancy.
Kenneth Earl Puckett
HORSE CAVE — Kenneth Earl Puckett, 76, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at his home.
He was the son of the late Knoff Puckett and Ollie Dorsey Puckett.
Survivors include his wife, Linda.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the chapel of Sego Funeral Home with burial in Munfordville Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 until 9 p.m. today (Wednesday), from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home until time for services.
Jessie Vaughan Wells
GLASGOW — Jessie Vaughan Wells, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.
Born in Barren County, she was the the daughter of the late Harvey Page Vaughan and Toopsie Boston Vaughan and wife of the late George Thomas Wells. Mrs. Wells was baptized at an early age into the Baptist faith, she was a graduate of Park City High School and retired from GTE.
Survivors include two sons: Jacky Thomas Wells and Jeffrey Todd Wells (Beth), both of Glasgow; three grandchildren: Justin Wells (Linsey), Tyler Wells and Mallie Wells, all of Glasgow; four sisters: Nova Jo Hensley and Billie Sue Goslin (Red) both of Louisville, Ruby Trabue of Mason City, Ill., and Eugenia Vaughn (John) of Glasgow; several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two sisters: Alice Jewell Vaughan and Mary Frances Vaughan; and six brothers: Morris, Harvey Page, James, Bob, Robert and Johnny Vaughan.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Moody Word
SUMMER SHADE — Moody Word, 84, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Barren County, he was the son of the late Thomas Howard and Ettie Bartley Word. Mr. Word was a member of the Refuge Church of Christ and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Emogene Ramey Word of Summer Shade; a son: Tommy Word and wife Lanell of Summer Shade; a daughter: Tina Harlow and husband Joe Harlow Jr. of Glasgow; three grandchildren: Stacy Fergerson and husband Trent of Bowling Green and Amanda and Megan Word, both of Summer Shade; a great-grandson: Spencer Toms of Bowling Green. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers: Mitchell, Malcolm and Milby Word; and two sisters: Mauree Crabtree and Myrtle Bonner.
