James Walter Allen
MERRY OAKS — James Walter Allen, 76, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Barren County Health Care Center in Glasgow.
Born in Barren County, was the son of the late Audrey Allen and the late Allie Myers Allen. Mr. Allen was a lifetime farmer, U.S. Army veteran and member of the Merry Oaks United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Glenna Pedigo Allen of Merry Oaks; one daughter: Judy Chambers (Coleman) of Portland, Tenn.; one brother: Bill Allen (Wilma) of Merry Oaks; two sisters: Jean Pursley of Glasgow and Dorothy Witty (James) of Glasgow; two grandchildren: Ben Chambers (Mary) of Merry Oaks and Shannon Sieck (Eric) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one great-grandchild: Leah Lane Chambers of Merry Oaks; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Rodney Allen; and two sisters: Hilda Furlong and Viola Allen.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Merry Oaks Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon until 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home.

Elenora Mae Branstetter
CORYDON, Ind. — Elenora Mae Branstetter, 89, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Indian Creek Health & Rehab in Corydon.
She was the daughter of the late Cecil Dowdie and Mildred McDaniels Dowdie. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elroy Branstetter.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. EST Monday, Nov. 2, with burial at Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery, Horse Cave, at 2 p.m. EST.
Valorie D. Book
GLASGOW — Valorie D. Book, 55, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at her residence.
A native of Indianapolis, she had been a coordinator at Lifeline for 30 years.
Survivors include her mother, Christine Johnson of Indianapolis; two sisters, Cindy Pennycuff of Glasgow and Peggy Richard of Bloomington, Ind.; two nieces: Stephanie Burris of Smiths Grove and Amanda Richard of Orlando, Fla.; one nephew: Danny K. Richard II of Bloomington.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Book, and one brother, Bobby Book.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Monday) at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.

BEECH GROVE, Ind. — Dennis Clyde Hammer, 83, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009
He was the son of the late William and Locie (Page) Hammer and husband of Maggie Lee Cloyd Hammer.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Strode Funeral Home in Tompkinsville with burial in Monroe County Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

GLASGOW — George Sherman Pursley, 81, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the Glasgow State Nursing Facility.

Charles Rountree
NORTHTOWN — Charles Rountree, 69, passed away at 9:55 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at the home of his daughter.
He was a Hart County native, a retired logger and a charter member, ordained deacon and trustee of Providence United Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Elmore Rountree and Vada Sturgeon Rountree; a brother, Clyde Rountree Jr.; and two sisters, Ester Rountree and Mavis Rountree.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Rountree of Northtown; two daughters: Sandra Rountree of Northtown and Martha Tapscott and her husband Steve of Northtown; two brothers: Roger Rountree of Northtown and David Rountree and his wife Carolyn of Northtown; two sisters: Nellie Clifford of Elizabethtown and Ruth Dickinson of Horse Cave; several nieces and nephews also survive.

SCOTTSVILLE — Helen M. Shockley, 70, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
The Fountain Run native was a homemaker and seamstress and a member of Maple Grove General Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Neal Foster Yokley and Lou Mona Katherin Shaw Yokley and wife of the late Barton Cordell Shockley.
She is survived by three sons: Cordell Shockley and wife, Tammie, Benny Neal Shockley and wife, Sandra, Tim A. Shockley and wife, Leann, all of Scottsville; one daughter: Lorie Short and husband, Charles, Glasgow; one brother: Murl Yokley and wife, Joyce, Fountain Run; four sisters: Carol Wheet and husband, Kenny, Alvaton, Louise Ford and husband, Gerald, Gamaliel, Jane Ann Elmore and husband, Jimmy, Tressie Houchens and husband, James, all of Lucas; a foster brother: Larry Shaw, Fountain Run; one sister-in-law: Eunice Eaton, Haywood; 11 grandchildren: William Shockley, Tabitha Whitlow, Tyson Baker, Lucas Slavey, Catherine Cuellar, Elizabeth Mitaikostas, Adam Short, Amy Lee Shockley, Latishia Shockley, Sarah Shockley and Nicholas Shockley; nine great-grandchildren: Dalton Whitlow, Reagan Whitlow, Zoe Baker, Kane Baker, Tashia Slavey, Josie Slavey, Xavier Cuellar, Zack Kendall and Nikki Kendall.

Nancy Finley Strode
TOMPKINSVILLE — Nancy Finley Strode, 67, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
She was born in Tompkinsville on Dec. 22, 1941, the daughter of the late Oak Finley and Estelle Shaw Finley. She was the head cook at Monroe County Middle School for 30 years and a member of Mount Poland Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons: Jimmy Neal Strode of Tompkinsville and Timmy Ray Strode of Glasgow; two daughters: Christie Starr Huffman of Bowling Green and April Annette Strode of Tompkinsville; four brothers: J.E. Finely of Dale, Ind., Jim Finley of Tompkinsville, Jerry Finley of Indianapolis, Ind. and Charlie Finley of Columbus, Ind.; four sisters: Brenda Finley of Florida, Runell Crawford and Linda White, both of Tompkinsville, and Nannette Finley of Florida; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by a son, James Dwayne Strode; one daughter, Patricia Strode; a brother, Roy Finley, one sister, Sara Simmons and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Yokley-Trible Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with Brother Paul Strong officiating. Burial will be in Mount Poland Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 3 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home.
