Mary Frances Jewell Awtry

CALIFORNIA – Mary Frances Jewell Awtry, 101, slipped gently from this life on Dec. 14, 2009, in Livermore, Calif., and was interred at the Jewell family cemetery in Lucas on Dec. 18. A native of Lucas, she was the daughter of Laura Henry and Samuel Jewell.

A loving, thoughtful, caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Frances was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, H. Paul Awtry. Besides her two daughters, Carolyn Lutes and Paula Harris, both of Pleasanton, Calif., she is also survived by her sister, Clara Smith, 92, of the NHC Nursing Home in Glasgow, and one nephew, Larry Patterson of Lucas. She was lovingly known as “my Nana” by her three grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason and Sarah Lutes, and four great-grandchildren who will miss her generous and loving spirit.

A woman of great beauty and grace, Mary Frances was a faithful, lifelong friend and an inspiration to many. She was an avid bridge player, accomplished seamstress, superior cook and was known to some as a successful animal “whisperer.”

Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Silver Oak Manor and Hope Hospice who provided tender loving care.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.



Jewell Neagle Beard

GREENSBURG – Mrs. Jewell Neagle Beard, daughter of the late Brown Neagle and Valley Shirrell Neagle, was born on Feb. 15, 1927, in Green County, and departed this life on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. She was 82 years, 10 months and three days of age. She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Liletown United Methodist Church. She was also a former Teacher’s Aide for the Green County Board of Education.

She united in marriage to Orville S. “Johnny” Beard on Jan. 26, 1946, who preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 2006.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: Larry and Kathy Beard of Edmonton; two daughters and son-in-law: Barbara and Phillip Thompson of Glasgow, and Oletia Carol and Charles Carter of Louisville; five grandchildren: Chris Thompson of Edmonton, Todd Beard of Bowling Green, Stephanie Shirley of Glasgow and Jeremy Thompson of Center; two great-grand: Ashton Thompson and Natalie Shirley; four step-great grandchildren: Marika Byrd, Halee Mosby, Latasha Mosby and Gretchen Mosby; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Beard was also preceded in death by a grandson: Conrad Carter.

The funeral services for Mrs. Jewell Neagle Beard were conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home. Burial was in the Liletown Cemetery in Green County. Rev. Gary Hardin and Joseph Wilcoxson officiated.

Millard E. Brown

PARK CITY – Millard E. Brown, 72, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in Louisville.

The Taylor County native was the son of the late Alvis Brown and the late Martha Melton Brown. He was self-employed in heating & cooling and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He wanted to be remembered as an honest and hard-working man. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother who was deeply cherished and loved.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Vance Brown of Park City; six sons: Steve Brown of Murray, Phillip Brown of Edmonton, and Butch Brown, Jason Brown, Marvin Jones and Doyle Jones, all of Park City; four daughters: Pam Glover of Big Clifty, Vetta White (Grover) of Park City, Jolene Murphy of Park City and Alice Walker of Cave City; one sister, Mary Anne Brown of Campbellsville; one brother-in-law, Jeff Vance of Park City; his mother-in-law, Vassie Ruth Wright of Park City; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Donald Ray Brown and Jerry Rodney Brown.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Patton Funeral Home, Park City Chapel, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery with a Navy graveside service.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Versie Lillian Cowles

OAKLAND – Versie Lillian Cowles, 95, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late S.B. Jenkins and Laura Masterson Jaggers and wife of the late Bacle Cowles.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Otter Gap Church with burial to follow in Otter Gap Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel.



Hilda Bennett Donithan

HORSE CAVE – Hilda Bennett Donithan, 71, of Horse Cave, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late John W. and Edna Bishop Hodges.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Donithan of Horse Cave.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Winn Funeral Home with burial in Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.



John Douglas Evans

TOMPKINSVILLE – John Douglas Evans, 72, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009.

He was born Jan. 12, 1937, in Monroe County. John lived in the Turkey Neck Bend community where he was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Turkey Neck Bend Church of Christ, Monroe County Cattleman Association, Agri-Tourism Community, Farm Bureau and served in the National Guard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doug and Bela White Evans.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Spear Evans, whom he married on Dec. 27, 1956. They have two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Mark McClure of Owatonna, Minn., and Kathy and Mike Page of Crossville, Tenn.; three grandchildren: Haley Kessinger of Owatonna, Minn., Matt and Daniel Page of Crossville, Tenn.; one brother, Tom Evans of Louisville; and an uncle, Clay Hundley of Tompkinsville.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Strode Funeral Home in Tompkinsville with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Monroe County. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Patricia ‘Patty’ Justice

ASHLAND – Patricia “Patty” Houchen Johnson Justice passed away at the Community Hospice Care Center on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009.

She was born Jan. 8, 1938, in Austin, Ind., to Cecil and Louise Houchen.

She is survived by her husband, Oren Justice, M.D.; a brother, Terry (Runell) Houchen of Glasgow; her children: Sherri Johnson-Kelly, Bryan (Maria) Johnson, J. Wesley (Karin) Johnson, II, DVM and Elaine (Steve) Corbitt; and her beloved grandchildren: Madeline, Kacie, Stephen, Alexandra, Taylor, Lily, Grace, Leighton and Anna Caryl. Also surviving are her stepsons: Daniel (Tona) Justice and Allen (Amy) Justice and the father of her children, J. Wesley (Phyllis) Johnson, M.D., and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Patty loved life. She was a registered nurse graduating from the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Louisville. She was as adventurous as she was petite. She rode in a hot air balloon and went soaring in Arizona, sailed in the Caribbean, snow skied in the Rockies, and drove the roads of Ireland, Scotland and England. She sang soprano and played the saxophone. But most of all she loved her family and her community. She was scout leader, PTA president, coach, Sunday school teacher and taxi driver extraordinaire. She was instrumental in the opening and operations of the Community Kitchen and the Shelter of Hope. She volunteered at King’s Daughters Medical Center and taught preschool at Ashland Child Development Center. In her final days she ensured winter clothes were purchased for children and families had gifts for Christmas.

All services will be at First Christian Church, 1930 Winchester Ave, Ashland, where she was a faithful member. Visitation is Tuesday, Dec. 22, 4 to 7 p.m. and the funeral service is noon on Wednesday, Dec. 23. Graveside services to follow at the Ashland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Organ Fund, the Community Kitchen, Shelter of Hope, Community Hospice or any favorite charity.



Stevie Paul Spear

BURKESVILLE – Stevie Paul Spear, 47, a resident of Cumberland Valley Manor, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the nursing home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home with burial in Spears Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

TOMPKINSVILLE — Brenda Gee Benberry, 50, of Summer Shade died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at her home. The funeral is Monday at 2 p.m. at Yokley-Trible Funeral Home. Burial is in Old Mt. Herman Cemetery.



GLASGOW — Lou Magdalene Richardson Smith, 71, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospi-tal in Glasgow. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Summer Shade Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Summer Shade Cemetery.
