Vester ‘Slokum’ Perry

CAVE CITY — Vester “Slokum” Perry, 81, of Cave City, KY, passed away at 5:56 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, KY. Mr. Perry was born on December 11, 1928. He was a retired farmer and a member of Harlow Chapel Baptist Church in Glasgow, KY.

He was the son of the late Charles Edward Perry and Alice (Green) Perry. He is survived by his wife; Betty Lee (Brown) Perry of Glasgow, KY.

He is also survived by six daughters: Jo Ann Harvey and Gracie Water, both of Denver, CO; Janice Galloway, Bowling Green, KY; Gertrude Rowlett, Elizabethtown, KY; Ida Mae Grider, Cave City, KY; Bertha Mae Bradley, Horse Cave, KY; five sons: Johnny Robert Perry (Hattie Elizabeth Gaines), Munfordville, KY; Hubert Perry (Roxie), Hardyville, KY; Dale Robert Perry, Glasgow, KY; Tony Adam Perry (Debra), Bowling Green, KY; Stanley Perry (Kelly Renee), Hardyville, KY; two sisters: Susie Bradley and Louise Perry, both of Munfordville, KY.

He is also survived by 20 grand children; 31 great-grand children and several great-great-grand children.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Arrangements are being handled by Brooks Funeral Home, Munfordville, KY, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, December 27, 2009 and at Harlow Chapel Baptist Church from 10:00 a.m. to time of service, Monday, December 28, 2009 with Rev. Keith Rowlett and Bishop Allen Dice officiating. Interment will be at Perry Family Cemetery in Canmer, KY.

Michael Wayne Keyes

HORSE CAVE — Michael Wayne Keyes, 39, Horse Cave, died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at his residence. A native of Boston, he was a son of the late Richard Eugene Keyes and Elizabeth Jones Keyes. He was an employee of Wendy’s and a collector of Indian Artifacts.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters, Kayla Patton of Oak Hill, Ohio and Emily Page Sturgill of Horse Cave; six brothers, Bob (Terri) Keyes of Nashville, Jim (April) Keyes of Beckley, WV, Danny (Denise) Keyes of Horse Cave, Roddy Keyes of Jefferson, GA and David Keyes of Boston; two sisters, Michelle Elam of Jefferson, GA and Donna Keyes-Desrosiers of Bellingham, MA; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Keyes.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Lighthouse Church in Horse Cave with burial in the Lighthouse Church Community Cemetery. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.



Anne Francis Rhoades

GLASGOW — Anne Francis Rhoades, age 90, died December 24 at the Barren County Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late George and Julia Bess Bewley Francis, and was married to Winfred B. Rhoades who preceded her in death February 18, 1983. Anne taught in the Barren County School System for over forty years, most of them in first grade at Austin-Tracy.

Survivors include one daughter, Georgia Rhoades (Dennis Bohr) of Boone, North Carolina; one grandson, John Christopher Disman of San Francisco; a niece, Pat Turner (Terry); and a nephew Mark Woodcock (Vivian) of Glasgow. She was preceded in death by her sister, Edith Francis Woodcock, and a brother-in-law, Charles Woodcock.

Anne was a member of Tracy United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for many years.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Tracy United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, December 26, from 4 to 9 p.m., Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Hughes Funeral Chapel in Fountain Run, KY and from 1 p.m. till service time at 3:30 at the Tracy United Methodist Church. Alternate expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the Methodist Children's Home in Versailles, KY or to the Tracy Cemetery in care of Tim England of at the funeral home.

Hughes Funeral Chapel in Fountain Run, KY is in charge of arrangements.



Evelyn Grubbs Smith

HORSE CAVE — Evelyn Grubbs Smith, 91, of Horse Cave, passed away at 10:20 a.m., December 25, 2009 at the Hart County Health Cave Center.

She was a Hart County native, farmer and homemaker and a members of Cave Spring Baptist Church. She has 72 years perfect attendance of the Waterloo Homemakers Club, was a member of W.M.U., a former Sunda School Teacher and an avid basketball fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Grubbs and Neva Bradley Grubbs; her husband, Leslie Smith; a son, Herman Allen Smith; a grandson, Adam Smith; three brothers, Clyde Houston Grubbs, Walter Grubbs and Daymon Grubbs.

Survivors include daughter Janice McCullough and her husband, Bill, Horse Cave; son Terry Alden Smith and his wife, Anna Grayson Smith, Horse Cave; daughter-in-law Gayle Newton Smith, Shepherdsville; half-sister Jane Grubbs Thompson, Munfordville; five grandchildren: Valerie Dawn Freeman, Sheila Smith, Eric Eskridge, Gwynne Leslie Aidala and Brennnan Smith; seven great-grandchildren: Jessica Cunningham, Vincent Slayton, Erica Eskridge, Riley Eskridge, Ty Aidala, Briley Aidala and Trey Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Winn Funeral Home Chapel on Monday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Funeral services are under the direction of Winn Funeral Home and will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2009 with burial in the Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery.

Cora Ruth Coffey

GLASGOW — Cora Ruth Coffey 79 of Glasgow died Friday, December 25, 2009 at the NHC Healthcare Facility in Glasgow. Born in Barren Co. she was the daughter of the late John & Beula Mae Harper Bragg. Mrs. Coffey was a Homemaker and a member of the Savoyard Baptist Church.

Survivers include her husband Joe Powell Coffey of Glasgow; a son Steve Coffey (Lisa) of Hiseville, KY; a daughter Linda Paulette Wheeler (William) of Glasgow; two grandchildren Sharon Poynter (Curtis) of Edmonton and Justin Coffey of Hiseville; nine great grandchildren Taylor, Danyel, Haley, Zackary, Jordan, Shannon, Amanda, Austin and Chevy; several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a brother Russell Bragg, two sisters Frances Jennings and Ollie Smith and a granddaughter Linda Rena Pedigo.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm Monday, December 28, 2009 at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the New Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be after 12:00pm Sunday at the funeral home.



Mary Ann Crown

Nashville, Tenn. — Mary Anne Crown, 73, of Nashville, TN, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at a friend’s residence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Crown and Stella Hedrick Crown.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. with burial to follow in the Lewis Chapel Cemetery.



Cynthia Ernestine Bell

EDMONTON — Cynthia Ernestine Bell age 94 of Edmonton died Friday December 25, 2009 at the T.J. Samson Hospital in Glasgow.

She was the daughter of the late William and Myrtle Judd Asbury. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in the Bell Family Cemetery.

She is survived by five children, seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Bell.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.



William (Bill) Roy Byrd

BOWLING GREEN — William (Bill) Roy Byrd, Jr., 86, of Bowling Green, passed away at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Britthaven of Bowling Green.

He was born in Barren County, Kentucky. He retired as Plant Manager of British Petroleum in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Bowling Green and was loved and respected by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Byrd, Sr. and Ethel May Wheeler Byrd, a brother, James Stanley Byrd, a sister, Catherine Turner, a nephew, Richard Earl Byrd and his favorite horse, Pride.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Hughes Byrd, of Bowling Green; a sister, Mary Frances Byrd Witty of Louisville; two nephews and one niece.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Winn Funeral Home. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 28, 2009 in the Chapel of Winn Funeral Home with burial in the Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery.



Roxy Louise Lester Perkins

PARK CITY — Roxy Louise Lester Perkins, 91, of Park City, KY, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Barren County Health Cave Center, Glasgow.

Born January 3, 1918, in Liberty, KY, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William Everett Lester and Willie Faye Lester. Mrs. Perkins graduated from Casey County High School, attended Campbellsville College and Berea College and was a graduate of Western Kentucky University. She was an elementary school teacher at Park City School for 22 years. She was a member of the Park City Baptist Church where she had served as assistant pianist and choir members. She was a past member of the Eastern Star and Park City Homemakers. Mrs. Perkins was preceded in death by an infant daughter Sandra Lou in 1946, her parents, sister, Mildred Helm, brother, Clifton Lester, brother, Dr. Woodrow Lester and sister, Mary Elizabeth Elliott.

She leaves behind her beloved husband, Harry Lynn “Joe” Perkins. The first time she saw this handsome guy, he was wearing a gold Murray sweater. The second time was on the tennis court. He caught her eye. They had a wonderful marriage lasting 72 years.

She was a loving mother to Janice Perkins Schell (Dr. Robert) of Owensboro, Nancy Perkins Cutliff (Adrian) of Melbourne, FL, Lynette Perkins (Mike Edgerly) of St. Paul, MN, and Joseph Lynn Perkins (Jan) of Bowling Green.

She was a “Nana” to grandchildren and great grandchildren. They all adored her. Kirk Cutliff of Louisville, Timothy Love (Helen) of Marietta, GA, Laura Cutliff Harp of Palm Beach, FL, Christopher Love (Michelle) of Owensboro, Adrea Cutliff McDonough (Paul) of Melbourne, FL, Ashley Cutliff Carrarro (Kevin) of Palm Bay, FL; her great grandchildren include, Michaela Cutliff Moore, Kayla Harp Krause, Allison Love, Kasey Harp, William Love, Jessica Love, Daniel Love, Sydney McDonough, Luke McDonough and Sam Carrarro.

Although she will be remembered by her family for many things, her gracious and loving demeanor stands out by those who knew her best. She had an gentle and sweet nature that will remain her legacy to those who loved and knew here. And, let us not forget her wonderful chocolate fudge!

Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2010 and 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at the Patton Funeral Home Park City Chapel.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at Patton Funeral Home Park City Chapel.

Services will be conducted by Bro. Toby Nunn and Father George McInnis with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Park City.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving and gentle care given by Dr. William Thornbury and the staff of the Barren County Health Care Center.

Sandra F. Green Ford

FOUNTAIN RUN — Sandra F. Green Ford, 55, of Fountain Run, KY, died Wednesday, December 23, 2009, in Barren County.

She was preceded in death by her father Orville Green.

She is survived by her mother, Freda Spencer Green of Fountain Run, KY, and her husband Charles L. Ford of Fountain Run, KY..

Visitation was Saturday.

Funeral services will be Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Strode’s Funeral Home’s Gamaliel Chapel in Gamaliel, KY. Burial will be in White Oak Ridge Cemetery in Monroe County.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Kosair Children’s Hospital.

GLASGOW — Grant Sturgeon, 65, of Glasgow, died Saturday, December 26, 2009 at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but are under the direction of the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home.
