John ‘Johnson’ Hampton Amos
BOWLING GREEN — John “Johnson” Hampton Amos, 64, a native of Park City, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at his residence.
He was the son of the late George Amos and Katie Amos.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Hayden Amos of Bowling Green.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 230 N. Hayden St., Park City, with interment at Barlow Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the church.

Dorotha Steenbergen Beam
AUSTIN — Dorotha Steenbergen Beam, 93, a Barren County native, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009 ,at the Medical Center in Scottsville.
Funeral services for Dorotha Steenbergen Beam were conducted on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Hughes Funeral Chapel in Fountain Run. Interment was in Pleasant Home Cemetery in Barren County. Contributions can be made to the Pleasant Home Cemetery.
Mrs. Beam was a retired school teacher from Jefferson and Barren counties in Kentucky. She was also a member of the Carlisle Baptist Church in Louisville.
She is survived by three sons: Jimmy (Barbara) Beam of Borden, Ind., Billy Beam of Cox’s Creek, and Daryl (Judy) Beam of Austin; two daughters: Kaye Braun (Mike) of Austin, and Glynda Shankey (John) of Orlando, Fla.; one sister: Sue Fraim of Fountain Run; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Louis and Laura Harrison Steenbergen; and her husband, Ralph Beam.

Michael David Parsley
BOWLING GREEN — Michael David Parsley, 54, was born Feb. 18, 1955, in Manchester, Tenn., the son of the late William and Margie Gibson-Parsley. He entered into eternal rest this past Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, in Bowling Green.
Mr. Parsley was a graduate of Waipahu High School in Hawaii with the class of 1973. He later attended Columbia State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He played guitar and was a chess enthusiast and enjoyed occasionally sailing on his boat the “Rendezvous.” As a young man, Mike raced and restored hot rod dragsters. One of his greatest joys was restoring an old Ford Falcon with his father, Bill. His greatest joy, however, was his family. They recall him as a great friend and mentor. He was a Christian, attending Hillvue Heights Church with his family.
Mr. Parsley was a businessman with ethical principles. As a 30- year veteran of the oil and gas industry, he founded Republic Exploration in 1979. He traveled extensively as an international oil consultant to Canada, Honduras, Sweden, and many European countries. Beginning his career in the oil industry in the late 1970s, he became an independent oil and gas producer that led to various professional chairs in the petroleum industry, including the Tennessee and Kentucky Oil and Gas Association. He was responsible for drilling over 400 oil wells across the United States. Mr. Parsley was a consultant to the Governor of Kentucky’s office regulating current oil and gas policies in the commonwealth.
Mr. Parsley is survived by his wife, Debbie; two sons: Michael D. Parsley II of Bowling Green and Jonathan B. Parsley of Bowling Green; two sisters: Sylvia Parsley-Sullivan of Nashville, and Mary Parsley-McDougal and husband Randy of Murfreesboro, Tenn. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law: Dr. David Barnett and wife Janine of Talbott, Tenn., and Jon Barnett and wife Rhonda of Pine Mountain, Ga. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Ozell Dyer, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, in Indianapolis.
She was the daughter of the late Orville Stockton and Mary Alice Brown Stockton and wife of the late Waymond Dyer.

Marjorie Laverne Garrett
GLASGOW — Marjorie Laverne Garrett, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.
Born in Metcalfe County, she was the daughter of the late Aubrey C. and Elcie Whitlow Hundley and wife of the late Henry O. Garrett. Mrs. Garrett was a member of the Union No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church, the Barren County Homemakers, a former employee of Mallory's in Glasgow and the Barren County school system.
Survivors include a daughter: Debra Fay Hawkins of Livingston, Tenn.; a son: Barry Eugene Garrett (Theresa) of Tompkinsville; five grandchildren: Johnathan Garrett (LaJill), Alexis and Dakota Gaw, Jennifer Hammer and Felicia Lee; and four great-grandchildren: Braden, Ashlynn, John Wesley and Shaylee.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Maurae Foster and Mildred Gore.

Lorene F. Gammon Lyons
TOMPKINSVILLE — Lorene F. Gammon Lyons, 99, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Monroe County Medical Center in Tompkinsville.
She was the daughter of the late James Monroe Gammon and Beadie Emberton Gammon and wife of the late Tip Lyons.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Strode Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with burial in Old Mount Hermon Cemetery in Monroe County. Visitation is in progress at the funeral home.

Grant Allen Sturgeon
GLASGOW — Grant Allen Sturgeon, 65, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Louisville, he was the son of the late Cecil Olson Sturgeon and Sally Weihe Kessler of Cordon, Ind., who survives. Mr. Sturgeon attended New Salem United Methodist Church and was retired from Eaton Brake & Axle Corporation. He was a past president of the Morning Rotary club, a former board member of the East Barren Volunteer Fire Department and the Chamber of Commerce, a Kentucky Colonel and was involved with Kiwanis Soccer League and volunteer with Eastern Elementary School Little League basketball program.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jenny Haynes Sturgeon of Glasgow; a daughter: Michele Williams (Todd) of Glasgow; a son: Kevin Grant Sturgeon (Donna) of Glasgow; four grandchildren: Spencer Grant Williams (Tabitha), Hunter Lee Williams, Justin Grant Sturgeon and Jakob Weihe Sturgeon; three brothers: Ernest Keith (Barbara) of Floyd Knobs, Ind., Richard Kessler of Corydon, Ind., and Cecil Olson Sturgeon of Oklahoma; four sisters: Judy Jeffries (Dennis), Yvonne Sturgeon, Rhonda Riggs and Wendy Koehl, all of Indiana; a special cousin: Dennis Anderson (Sharon) of Louisville; five children that were very special to him: Matt Young, Alysia Young, Ben Williams, Samantha Williams and Matt Williams; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Ruel G. Thompson
HORSE CAVE — Ruel G. Thompson, 76, passed away 5:25 p.m. Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Mr. Thompson was born in Green County, a retired manager of Amerigas Corporation, farmer and a member of Horse Cave Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Frances Thompson of Horse Cave; a daughter: Pamela Renee Turner and husband Randy of Horse Cave; two sons: Billy Thompson and wife Marilyn of Horse Cave, and Mark Thompson and wife Patricia of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren: Wendy Caudel, Scott Thompson, Nick Thompson and Ben Thompson; five great-grandchildren: Shelby Caudel, Zachary Caudel, Kellen Thompson, Carson Thompson and Jackson Thompson; several nieces and nephews
