Matthew Patrick Casteel

GLASGOW — Matthew Patrick Casteel was stillborn Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow.

Survivors include his mother, Kristina Danielle (Goode) Casteel, and his father, Michael Adam Casteel, both of Smiths Grove; maternal grandparents, Pamela Marie Reece Goode and Billy Ray Goode of Haywood; paternal grandparents, David and Ara Wood Casteel of Temple Hill; maternal great-grandparents, Patsy Reece of Glasgow and Margaret Goode of Glasgow; paternal great-grandparents, Enimuse Casteel of Glasgow, and Nettie Wood of Flippin; three aunts, three uncles, and nine great-aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home.

Blond D. Duvall

GLASGOW — Blond D. Duvall, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Glasgow Health & Rehab Center.

Born April 21, 1927, in Barren County, she was the daughter of the late Acie and Ruby Pardue Steenbergen and wife of the late Earl Duvall. Mrs. Duvall was a member of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two brothers: Dell Steenbergen (Noxie) and Larry Steenbergen (Sylvia), both of Glasgow; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Rodney Steenbergen; and two sisters, Margaret Gosnell and Juanita Jones.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Owen Eugene Gilbert

LEXINGTON — Owen Eugene Gilbert, 79, died Tuesday, Jan 12, 2010, in  Lexington.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1930, in Paducah. He graduated from Tilghman High School in 1948 and from Paducah Junior  College in 1950.  He worked at the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years  and served as postmaster of the Glasgow Post Office before his  retirement in 1987. He was an officer in the Lion's Club, taught  Sunday School for 25 years at First United Methodist Church in  Glasgow, was a faithful volunteer at First UMC’s Food Pantry, and  supported the Glasgow YMCA. 

He is survived by six children: Terri  (Dave Hubbard) Gilbert, Boynton Beach, Fla., Debra Flynt, Lexington,  Sherrie (Jack) Duff, Lexington, Clark Gilbert, Cocoa, Fla., Malena  (David) Hatcher, Springfield, Tenn., and Lora Nell Gilbert, Berea;  seven grandchildren: Ryan (Christine) Flynt, Casey (Angie) Flynt,  Sarah (Jeff) Levy, Patrick (Sarah) Duff, Greta Hatcher, Elsa Hatcher and Francis Sparrowen; nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Forest  Gilbert.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robertson Lee  Gilbert, James Gilbert and William Gilbert.

In lieu of flowers,  donations may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass or the Alzheimer’s  Association.

A gathering of family and friends will be 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the Clark Legacy Center in Nicholasville.

Wanda Jane Maxey

HARDYVILLE — Wanda Jane Maxey, 65, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Caverna Memorial Hospital in Horse Cave.

She was the daughter of Alberta Hayes of Nicholasville, who survives, and the late Roy Herdon. Other survivors include her husband, Henry Maxey, of Horse Cave.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Brooks Funeral Home, Munfordville. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.



Ralph McCandless

KNOB LICK — Ralph McCandless, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow.

He was the son of the late Brown and Arvil Boston McCandless. Ralph was a retired farmer, a World War II Army veteran and member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Knob Lick.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in Boston Cemetery at Sulphur Well. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Irwin McCandless; four sons: Stanley McCandless of Gainesville, Fla., Roger McCandless of Knob Lick, Tony McCandless of Hiseville and Rex McCandless of Knob Lick; two daughters: Shirley Crawford of Louisville and Renetta Bailey of Sulphur Well; one sister: Trixie Lane of Danville; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by two sons, Mitchell and David McCandless; and four brothers.

Charles Kenneth Peterson

GLASGOW — Charles Kenneth Peterson, 61, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010.

He was the son of the late William Herbert Peterson and Edna White Peterson. He was a Vietnam veteran with several medals and awards including the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Reitha Hibbs Peterson; three sons: Michael David Peterson, Jason Alan Peterson and Justin Kenneth Peterson, all of Glasgow; one brother: Bill Peterson of Michigan; one sister: Vivian Hughes of Alabama. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 North Dixie Blvd., Radcliff, at 2 p.m. ET on Friday.

Vada Glynn Saltsman

GLASGOW — Vada Glynn Saltsman, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at the Medical Center of Bowling Green.

Vada Glynn was born in Barren County, the daughter of Carl Okla and Velma Billingsley Pardue. Since 1947, she has been a faithful member of Big Meadow Baptist Church, teaching the Primary Sunday School Class for many years, singing in the choir and also being the church pianist for 50 years.

Vada Glynn was a 1961 graduate of Western Kentucky University. She taught first grade in the Barren County and Glasgow Independent Schools for three years, then became a stay-at-home mother and homemaker.

She is survived by her loving husband, Roscoe Saltsman; three daughters: Beth Saltsman and special friend Jimmy Vibbert of Glasgow, Lori Jones (Scotty) of Bowling Green, and Kara Sexton (Jody) of Glasgow; three granddaughters: Whitney Shirley, and twins, Madison and Blair Correll. She is also survived by many special cousins and her precious church family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her father and mother.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Big Meadow Baptist Church with A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the Big Meadow Church Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

PARK CITY — Harry Lynn “Joe” Perkins, 95, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Barren County Health Care Center, Glasgow. Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Patton Funeral Home, Park City Chapel, and Sunday from noon until 2 p.m. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Park City. GLASGOW — Jonathan Brent Poore, 33, died Monday Jan. 11, 2010, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville after an extended illness. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Thursday). GLASGOW — Danny Ray Sherfey, 55, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2009, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Visitation is in progress at the funeral home. Mr. Sherfey’s wife’s name was listed incorrectly in his obituary on Tuesday. Her correct name is Pamela Gail White.



GLASGOW — Violet Carrie Young Wood, 86, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Burkesville. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in North Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Pompano Beach, Fla. Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. until time for the service.



FOUNTAIN RUN – Wesley Clay Woods, 22, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at the Monroe County Medical Center in Tompkinsville. Funeral services will be today (Thursday) at 1:30 p.m. at Strode Funeral Home, Gamaliel Chapel, with burial in Fountain Run Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Kosair Children’s Hospital.
