A few things to know about what’s coming

GLASGOW — Today we have some programming notes. On Friday, the Glasgow Daily Times’ annual football preseason preview will be published. It is scheduled to include football team photos, rosters, schedules and reports of expectations by coaches.

It may be hard for some teams to match their successes from last season, but others are certainly looking to be better than they were. It will be hard to match the excitement of last season when the Glasgow Scotties were one of the top Class 2A teams in the state. But for Kyle Fuller, quarterback at Covington Holy Cross, who played a spectacular game, the Scotties may have captured their first KHSAA football state title.

Football action begins Friday night when the Caverna Colonels kick off against Eminence at 7 p.m. at B.H. Weaver Stadium. The Colonels won once last season, beating Clinton County. They lost at Eminence to open last year.

Monroe County begins its gridiron season Friday night at Franklin-Simpson. Word from “Town” is the Falcon faithful will see a fine team. Monroe was 6-6 last season, reaching the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Barren County, Glasgow and Metcalfe County all open their seasons on Saturday, Aug. 18, in the T.J. Samson Healthcare Careers Bowl. Glasgow will play Todd County Central at 5 p.m., heat permitting, then Barren will face Metcalfe at 7 p.m.

There are about 63 players on the Trojans’ roster, 13 of which are seniors. Those numbers are good for the program. Barren won its first two and last three regular season games last year before falling in the first round of the playoffs.

Metcalfe had a tough 2011 season, winning only two games. The Hornets will have a new head coach with the retirement of Larry Harbison. His brother Freddie takes over.

Some people love Christmas as their favorite time of the year. My gifts come in August.
