OUR VIEW: Devotion to children is impressive

Staff report

GLASGOW — It was hard to go anywhere in our community this week without someone talking about the accomplishments of area youth baseball and softball teams.

One thing that can almost always be said about Glasgow and Barren County is that the residents support the endeavors of the area youth. Whether they are athletic events, plays, musicals, dance recitals, in whatever the children may be involved, individuals and area businesses support them.

One thing the children can teach us, especially when they have success on state and/or national stages, is that our community can, when our efforts are focused on a goal, compete with any other community. Glasgow and Barren County may not always finish first, but there certainly can be a good showing put forth.

At the moment, our community has taken a solid punch from the recession that has hammered much of the rest of the United States. The punch has been felt in the area automotive supplier manufacturers through employee layoffs, production slowdowns and shift reductions.

Our community can recover and our children have shown the way.

We must compete.

We can do so only if there is a solid plan on the table for upgrading the education and training levels of the local workforce so that we can attract a more diverse manufacturing base to our community.
