Return of routine is good

GLASGOW — Even though we have been faced with a serious drought and horrific temperatures, this time of year is one that I have always enjoyed.

The MLB trade deadline has passed, college football players are grinding it out in two-a-day practices, Sunday's NFL Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, is rapidly approaching and so is the local high school football scene.

For me, this time of year means one thing — routine.

Parents are looking forward to their kids returning to school and getting back in a routine, therefore, bringing some balance back to the household.

While parents may be looking forward to the first day of school, area students I have spoken with (you know who you are), are counting down their remaining days of freedom, as some return to their respective school as early as today.

Routine can be good or bad, depending on the individual.

We are creatures of habit, and a routine can bring comfort to certain personalities, myself included.

I am officially branching out and undertaking a new routine — prep football throughout Barren County.

In Missouri, at least in Springfield, the prep football scene is crazy … before and after the games.

School parking lots look like a Fleetwood Mac reunion concert had just let out.
