THUMBS UP: Citizens should thank Matthews

GLASGOW — Magistrate Tommy Matthews did something Tuesday for which many have expressed an appreciation. He told fellow Barren County Magistrate Chris Steward enough had been heard from him.

Steward continued to beat the drum of not wanting to agree to a settlement of an open records lawsuit. The agreement had been made during a closed session at a prior meeting as part of ongoing litigation.

The magistrates were only there Tuesday to vote on what they had already settled.

“If that was agreed upon and an action was taken, that was a blatant violation of open meetings law,” Steward said. He continued on that point for a short time.

Then, Matthews, apparently having heard enough, responded: “Chris, what are you trying to prove? Who cares what your opinion is about that?”

Steward’s diatribe was stopped cold and none too soon.

Thank you, Mr. Matthews. For too many months, Steward’s rantings have been allowed to dominate county government business. If he can’t conduct himself in a manner befitting a public servant, then he should be allowed no room to talk.
