DG to open in Summer Shade

SUMMER SHADE — Officials with the Dollar General Corporation confirmed Tuesday that they will be opening a new store in southern Metcalfe County.

The new store will be the second Dollar General store in Metcalfe County and will be located on Summer Shade Road.

City and county officials were pleased to hear the news.

“That’s a good sign that they are interested in locating another store here in Metcalfe County,” said Edmonton Mayor Howard Garrett.

The opening of the new store will not only create more shopping opportunities for Metcalfe County residents, but it will also bring jobs to the area, he said.

News of the store opening falls on the heels of a lay-off announcement by Sumitomo Electrical Wiring Systems Inc. The company’s Edmonton facility has announced they will layoff 79 hourly employees and an undetermined number of salaried employees by the end of June.

The Dollar General Corporation looks at a number of factors when making the decision to open a new store. They include demographic trends, traffic patterns and customer needs.

“Summer Shade was a great match for us,” said Emily Weiss, media relations manager. “We are always searching for opportunities to grow in new communities where it makes sense for us. We are looking forward to being able to serve the people in Summer Shade.”

Weiss confirmed that Dollar General Corporation has signed a property lease, but did not have any information about when construction would begin or opening date.

At the first of April the corporation reported record sales and operating profit for the 2008 fiscal year. In addition, it announced plans to create up to 4,000 jobs in 2009 to support the company’s plans to open 450 new stores, according to a company press release.

“The nation’s largest retailer by number of company-owned locations, Dollar General will be adding jobs throughout the 35 states in which it currently operates to compliment and sustain the more than 72,000 employees who either work in or support the 8,400-store chain,” the press release said.

“Dollar General is excited about our company’s future plans. Our growth will add positions in many markets severely hit by the recessions,” said Bob Ravener, Dollar General’s senior vice president and chief people officer in the press release. “Particularly during these difficult economic times, Dollar General is proud to create opportunities and attract top talent that will also support families in the communities where we do business.”
