HORSE CAVE — MEETING: Caverna Board of Education
DATE: March 11, 2010
ACTION: School board members took the following action: Approve agenda as prepared and presented; minutes of Feb. 11 meeting, treasurer’s report; monthly activity fund reports; lunchroom accounts and bus inspections; field trip requests; fundraiser requests; orders of the treasurer; approved personnel items as presented; agreed to appoint superintendent as school board secretary and to appoint the assistant superintendent to serve as substitute board secretary in the absence of the superintendent; approved participation in the federal and/or state funded programs for 2010-11 school year and authorized the superintendent and/ or designee to submit applications for funding; approved KISTA resolution; approved season travel for boys/girls tennis, softball and baseball teams; approved building and grounds permits for installation of new bleachers in the gym at Caverna High School; approved all current policies and procedures to be waived to the extent that they set forth March 1 as the applicable council allocation deadline and that the May 1 deadline authorized by the Kentucky Bord of Education for the current year is substituted; agreed to set June 4 as graduation date; and agreed to amend the 2009-10 school calendar to include the first two days of spring break.
PRESENTATIONS: Community Service Awards were presented to Destiny Dennis for being named to Kentucky Music Educator’s Association Third District All District Band, Anecia Cobb for receiving a Drug Awareness Award and Dakota Calvert for his performance at a regional job and transition fair. Caverna Elementary Principal Nathan Wyatt and elementary school psychologist April Bowersox gave a presentation on how students are progressing in math and reading.
REPORTS: Caverna Middle School Principal Barry Nesbitt reported on a $4,900 grant the school had received through the Dart Corporation and rewarding 40 students for meeting integrity rewards. He also reported on preparation for assessment tests. Caverna High School Principal Debbi Lindsey gave a report on ACT testing and the WKU Math Placement test. Alisha Richardson, special education coordinator, gave a report on the purchase of 10 iPods for students with disabilities. Cornelius Faulkner, director of pupil personnel, commended the high and middle school on doing a good job with their students and asked school boards members to stop by and visit the schools and see how the climate has changed. He also reported that Iowa test will be given soon. Superintendent Sam Dick reported on a piece of legislation that would have changed how principals are hired, but said the bill was defeated in a state committee meeting. He also reported that Rep. Dottie Sims, D-Horse Cave, is working to secure money for the replacement of the boiler at Caverna High School and asked that school board members call state senators and ask that they vote to keep the money in the state’s budget.
CLOSED SESSION: School board members met in closed session to discuss potential litigation. Upon resuming their open session, no action was taken.
