Rain delays MS construction

EDMONTON — Rainy weather has delayed work on the construction of Metcalfe County’s new middle school project.

“We are somewhat behind schedule due to inclement weather [and] rock and unsuitable soil issues we have encountered,” said Patricia Hurt, superintendent.

The new middle school is being built by Isaac Tatum Construction Company adjacent to Metcalfe County High School.

“They are trying to dry-in as many roof areas as possible to get ready for the winter,” said Larry Williams, a construction consultant for the school system.

The middle school is one of two construction projects the school system currently has in the works. The other is a new primary center on the Edmonton Elementary campus.

Work on the access road for the existing elementary is under way, said Daryl Wheeler with Venture Contracting Inc., which is the construction manager for the project.

“We expect to take bids on the building on Nov. 1,” he said.

The access road is being constructed by Brockman Construction.

The Metcalfe County Board of Education approved final drawings for the new primary center during their Sept. 19 meeting and agreed to advertise for construction bids, Wheeler said.

The primary center will be for students in preschool through the second grade.

“It is a very exciting time in Metcalfe County. This is the first major school construction we have witnessed in 15 years,” said Hurt.

“To have the school construction projects under way at the same time keeps us all very busy. These projects will provide a great learning environment for the children of our county.”
