Barren student wins scholarship from seed firm

GLASGOW — A Barren County High School graduate has received a $1,000 scholarship from Garst Seed Company through the National FFA Organization.

Loyd Britt, who graduated from BCHS in May, plans to attend Western Kentucky University’s Glasgow campus to study agronomy and crop science.

“I’ve just always liked working with plants,” Britt said.

He is spending the summer helping his dad, Tim, on the family’s farm and selling produce he and his family raise.

The family grows a variety of produce, including corn.

Britt is one of 26 FFA students from around the country to receive such a scholarship from Garst. The Slater, Iowa-based seed company committed $75,000 to the FFA Collegiate Scholarship Program in 2005 as part of its 75th anniversary celebration, according to a press release. Garst pledged to award 75 scholarships over a three-year period.

“So many of us at Garst have wonderful memories of being involved in FFA when we were in school, so this scholarship program is a natural fit for us,” said Lori Thomas, communications manager for Garst. “We know the investment we’re making in Loyd’s education, as well as the other recipients, will be returned to us in the future when these young leaders join us in the field of agriculture.”

Nationwide, five scholarships were awarded to students studying agriculture education or communications; 10 for agriculture marketing, merchandising or sales majors; and 11 to students pursuing other agriculture-related degrees, the press release said.

Britt has already given some thought as to what type of career he would like to pursue upon graduating from college.

“I’d like a job as a field rep for Southern States or something along those lines,” he said.

Britt is the son of Tim and Vicki Britt, of Glasgow.
