York named BC director of special programs

GLASGOW — Cynthia York, a former teacher consultant for special programs, was named as the new director of special programs Thursday morning.

The position became vacant when Mark Wallace accepted the assistant superintendent position earlier this month.

Prior to serving as the Barren County School District director of special programs, York was special education teacher at Barren County Middle School for five years. From there, she served as the district teacher consultant for special programs for 14 years.

York has numerous degrees and certifications from the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University.

She also has a Rank I in special education from WKU.

“Cynthia has a tremendous rapport with students, staff and families,” said Superintendent Bo Matthews. “I was confident there’d be a seamless transition.”

Matthews said he knew the position needed to be filled because “it’s a critical area” for Barren County Schools.

A few of York’s responsibilities will be to offer support for the exceptional student program, work closely with the school psychologist, counselors and teachers to help meet the particular needs of students and  she’ll be responsible to make sure staff are up-to-date with training.

York’s new position took effect Thursday.

At this time, Matthews said he does not plan on filling York’s former teacher consultant for special programs position due to an expected tight budget in the 2013-14 school year.
